A word from our Principal, Colin
Wilberforce College has been a prominent establishment in the Hull community since 1988. We have grown year on year and currently serve around 1,350 students from East Hull, West Hull and the East Riding villages.
We offer all the specialisms of a sixth form college, delivering exclusively to 16-19 years olds, but have a broad curriculum that includes A Level, T Level, BTEC and City & Guilds qualifications. Our Level 3 Advanced qualifications are particularly successful and we continuously see our students progress to some of the best universities and careers.
The Collegeās support services are outstanding and complement studentsā learning to ensure that they have the best chance of success and their experience with us extends beyond the classroom.
We continue to make significant investment in the Collegeās facilities, staff and students, ensuring that we remain the first choice for students, both now and in future years.

Last week we were thrilled to welcome PC Roberts (right) and welcome back Wilberforce Alumni PC Blanchard (left) to the college to discuss harassment and give students information on how to protect themselves, as well as being aware of their actions towards others. š¬
It is important not only this week, but to make it part of our everyday lives to spread awareness of how your actions affect others and ultimately have consequences.
PC Blanchard undertook a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Public Services at Wilberforce and then progressed onto University to study Criminology. Whilst there, they became a police special, before becoming a full time police officer. ā

A Level Law students recently welcomed Clinical Negligence Paralegal Leonie Collingwood from the law firm @clmedilaw and Youth Voice Practitioner Izzy Kitney from the children`s charity Kids to Wilberforce.
The pair gave an inspiring and informative talk on different roles within the legal sector, how to navigate this career pathway and shared their own personal experiences they`ve had reaching their current careers to the group, thank you again Izzy and Leonie! ā

A group of First Year students who are part of the University Excellence Programme recently attended an Oxbridge Conference hosted by @johnleggottcollege. This was a valuable opportunity for the group to gain further experience of how to master their UCAS application and discuss with fellow like-minded students who have the ambition to attend some of the best universities in the world following their college journey, whether that be #Oxford or #Cambridge, or one of the #RussellGroup š
There was an interesting insight from some Second Year students currently with offers from these prestigious universities, who talked about their personal experiences and offered advice. Our own biology legend and Science Technician Dr Martin Walker was part of the interview preparation sessions at the conference, representing Biology and Biomedical Science. š§«

Yesterday saw the turn of Health & Sciences as the focus theme in the series of Careers Days at Wilberforce. š©ŗš§¬
The college was full of an array of exhibitors including employers, apprenticeship providers and universities all here to engage and provide advice to students about future career pathways and higher education opportunities! š¬

Our local healthcare providers are some of the biggest employers in the area employing staff in roles such as finance, IT, business admin, HR, engineering, as well as health-related roles.

For those students looking to undertake some voluntary work, Hull University Teaching Hospitals Voluntary Services were here to chat about volunteering opportunities in the majority of departments in our local hospital, not just patient facing roles.
@sunderlanduni University Training Ambulance had a lot of interest parked out the front of college and enabled students to gain first hand experience of what it is like to work and operate onboard one of these critical pieces of medical-care equipment as well as a crash course in life-saving paramedic care. šØ
As a Wilberforce student you will have ample opportunity to gain an insight into many different career pathways through fairs like this, workshops, external visits and guest speakers as well as one-to-one career guidance with our Careers Manager.

Last week Law, Criminology and Politics students engaged in an incredibly interesting talk from former Leader of the Green Party and Member of the House of Lords, Baroness Natalie Bennett.
Not only did @nataliebennettgreen go into detail about roles in the British Government, real-life political jargon and the process in which the @ukhouseoflords pass laws, she also gave an extremely personal experience of what it is actually like work within politics, enabling the students gain an invaluable insight into this career pathway. š¤©
The session culminated in a Q&A section where students enquired about Natalieās stance on topical debates, as well gaining tips on how to āwowā future examiners with particular references from her parliamentary repertoire. ā

PAST BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS & GEOGRAPHY STUDENT
Sammi, formerly of Withernsea High School, has gone onto achieve great success pursuing her ambition of a career within the scientific industry. After studying Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Geography with Wilberforce, Sammi continued her educational journey at the University of Hull studying for a degree in Biomedical Science – much to the joy of her former Biology teacher Martin who she is still fondly remembered by! Sammiās positive outlook and cheery demeanour as a Wilberforce student was equal to her hard work and commitment to her studies, so it is no surprise she committed herself to completing her doctorate in Medical Microbiology at Hull York Medical School. Using this impressive track record of excellence in research, she secured an R&D post at Reckitt, quickly transferring to her current role as a medical writer for Reckittās Global Affairs Division, seeing her travel the world using her passion for science communication and expertise to advise and educate consumers and fellow researchers in this global medical giant. Sammi has shone brightly since her days at Wilberforce and we are so proud of her achievements which we were delighted to celebrate during our recent Achievement Awards Evening.
