The ‘WonderHull Life’ Mural has been designed for the tenants of the Hull City Council owned flats for over 55’s, to reflect the beauty of Hull’s natural and urban areas. Students at Wilberforce Sixth Form College created the artwork after receiving a request from nearby Bayswater Court Tenants and Residents Group, TARA, to help brighten up their community garden. The College on Saltshouse Road in Hull, had already formed some positive links with Bayswater Court residents with students helping out with gardening activities and inviting residents in to be pampered in the Wilberforce hair & beauty salons.
Mandy Fall, Co-ordinator of Vocational Studies at Wilberforce, comments
‘BTEC Vocational Studies students and BTEC Art & Design students have collaborated on this social action project, which uses art to tell a story about our wonderful area and everything it has to offer. The activity has also brought the college student and local resident communities closer together. We hope the addition of this special mural to the residents’ garden will both brighten up the area and bring back some wonderful memories of Hull for them.’
The sizeable 8 metre by 1 metre ‘WonderHull Life’ Mural has been printed onto weather proof board by local printers Premier Signs and has received such good feedback already that plans are being made to also have a replica of the mural on the Wilberforce College site.
The mural unveiling ceremony will take place at 11am on Friday 4th May in the Community Garden at Bayswater Court Flats, Bellfield Avenue, HU8 08X, Hull.
Ings Ward Councillors Denise Thompson and Allan Gardener, Wilberforce Sixth Form College Principal, David Cooper, Sherilee Jepmond, Hull City Council Tenant Participation Officer, will be present together with representatives of Bayswater Court TARA and Wilberforce College students.
Photographers are welcome.
