Ben Reveley & The Royal Academy

Wilberforce student, ben reveley, has had his work accepted for the young artists’ summer show at The Royal Academy of arts this year. One of over 21,000 entries, Ben wowed the judges, made up of a panel of esteemed artists and architects and secured a place in the exhibition.

The Royal Academy of Arts is a prestigious school, gallery and museum, which is led by the leading artists and architects of the day.  Every summer, they open the largest open-submission exhibition in the world, as well as a separate one for young artists.  Students aged between 4-19 can submit their work for judgement and possibly achieve the accolade of having it hang in their hallowed halls.

Second-year Fine Art A Level student, Ben, submitted his piece ‘Architectural Form’ to the Academy, without hope that much else would come of it, however, he was overjoyed when his teacher Tim Smith told him, he had not only secured a place in the online exhibition, but also at the show at the Royal Academy itself! Tim said – “We are really pleased for Ben, it’s a great achievement to be accepted for the exhibition. This is a brilliant experience for a young artist to see their work up in a gallery, but to have it in The Royal Academy is extra special.” Only a small number of entries are selected for this honour and Ben is extremely proud of himself and his achievement.

Ben’s piece is a collagraph relief; a special printing technique using collage materials to make a stamp and then using ink to make a print on paper. The piece is inspired by a building in Pennsylvania called ‘Fallingwater’, which Ben found very interesting and aesthetically pleasing. Designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1935, the building is partly built over a waterfall. Ben decided to use different shapes on his relief sculpture to create an abstract version of the building.

The Royal Academy Young Artists’ Summer Show begins 19 July 2022 and Ben’s artwork will be free to view both on site in London and online in their virtual show. We’re so proud of everything he has achieved and can’t wait to see it displayed in such an esteemed location. Well done Ben!
