Course Entry Requirements

4 A*-C grades at GCSE in at least three or more subjects, including a minimum of grade 4/D in English.

If you are interested in joining the College we will arrange a meeting with an experienced subject counsellor who will help you to choose courses that best suit your ambitions and achievements.

All entry requirement details are correct at the time of publication, September 2018, however, the College may need to make some changes by September 2019 in the light of student demand, staff availability and external factors beyond the College’s control.

What will I study?

Year One Units:

You will study a total of three units over the first year of the course. These cover areas such as:

  • Investigating the Nature of Business
  • Marketing in Business
  • Business Resources
Year Two Units:

The second year of the course follows the pattern of the first. Again you will study a total of three units including:

  • Business Retailing
  • Preparing for Employment in Business
  • Internet Retailing

What skills do I need?

  • A commitment and interest in finding out more about the business world.
  • An ability to plan your work to meet deadlines.
  • A willingness to find information and expand knowledge through research.
  • A basic ability to express work ideas in clear written and spoken English.

Why should I study this course?

Prepare for a career in the world of business, gain practical insight into how products and services work and discover why business is so important for the economy. This is a vocational course which will help prepare you for working in business. You will have the opportunity to learn about the world of business. You will find out how it works and why it is such an important part of the economy.

Most importantly, the course will help develop the skills which employers value and expect from prospective workers of the future.

This two year course is equivalent to one full A Level. It is an ideal stepping stone to either a job in business or perhaps further study in a business related field at university such as marketing, finance or personnel.

How is the course assessed?

The course is assessed mostly through coursework. All coursework units are internally marked and externally moderated. There is also an examination each year.

What will this course prepare me for?

This course will give you an excellent understanding of how businesses of all sorts work. It will help prepare you for being successful in finding a job in one of the many sectors of the business world, working in a retail environment, in the public sector or in the world of finance.

You may, of course, use the course as a means of securing a Higher Education place on one of the very many business related degree courses available at university

Private Study

You will be expected to complete at least 2 hours of private study a week. This work is outside of the classroom and will enable you to complete your coursework tasks and achieve your target grade.

What materials will I need to provide?

The college will provide you with basic textbooks and teaching materials. You will need to purchase paper, pens and other writing materials. We would advise you to obtain a USB stick to help you with the completion of coursework outside of lessons.

You would like to study a subject that uses a variety of learning activities, including visits to local or regional businesses, work placements and the opportunity to hear from experienced speakers who are industry experts.

BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Business is not for you if:

You are not interested in finding out how the world of business works or are not very good at keeping to coursework deadlines.
