Course Entry Requirements

No formal qualifications are required for this course.

If you are interested in joining the College we will arrange a meeting with an experienced subject counsellor who will help you to choose courses that best suit your ambitions and achievements.

All entry requirement details are correct at the time of publication, September 2017, however, the College may need to make some changes by September 2018 in the light of student demand, staff availability and external factors beyond the College’s control.

What will I study?

You will learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the hair and beauty sector.  Learning will take place in both the classroom and in the College’s modern and well-equipped training salons.

You will develop your understanding of the wide range of practices and procedures needed to work in the exciting hair and beauty industry such as shampoo and conditioning, styling women’s and men’s hair, nail art, skin care and health and safety.

The course is broken down into a number of units covering a wide range of hair and beauty salon procedures and practices. The units that you must study are:

  • Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector
  • Presenting a Professional Image in a Salon
  • Follow Health and Safety in the Salon
  • Working with others

You must also study a range of optional units that may include:

  • Shampoo and Conditioning
  • Hair Plaiting
  • Skin Care
  • Hand Care
  • Styling Women’s Hair
  • Styling Men’s Hair
  • Nail Art
  • Providing Basic Pedicure Treatments
  • Colour hair using temporary colour
  • Create a hair and beauty image
  • Salon reception duties

Why should I study this course?

If you like to help make people feel good, pampered and relaxed, then a career in the hair and beauty sector could be for you.

This one year course will suit you if you enjoy working with people and like to learn in both a practical and classroom environment.

How is the course assessed?

The assessment for the qualification will require you to perform practical tasks and also show your knowledge and understanding in assignments.

 

What will this course prepare me for?

Further education, employment and/or career progression in the hair and beauty sector.

Private Study

As an approximate guideline you should be practising your hairdressing and beauty therapy skills and developing your knowledge for around 8 hours per week. Ideally you will find regular work experience within the hair and beauty sector.

What materials will I need to provide?

You must provide your own black tunic, black trousers and flat, black, enclosed, thick soled shoes. You will be expected to bring your own stationery (ie paper, pens etc).

Other essential products and equipment required for you to successfully complete your course will be provided for you. Many of our students find it beneficial to buy a college beauty therapy and hairdressing kit and a text book in order to develop their skills and knowledge at home.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught the theory and practical aspects of hairdressing & beauty therapy in both the classroom and our modern, well equipped training salons. Your enthusiastic teachers will help you to develop the essential skills and personal qualities needed for a successful performance in your working life.

The City and Guilds Level 1 Diploma in Hair and Beauty Course is for you if:

You have an interest in hairdressing and beauty therapy and enjoy learning in both practical and classroom environments.  This course is also for you if you are willing to give and receive hairdressing and beauty therapy treatments and enjoy working with others.

You should also be a positive and motivated person who is able to provide models for hairdressing and beauty therapy treatments and services.

The City and Guilds Level 1 Diploma in Hair and Beauty Course is not for you if:

You do not wish to give and receive beauty therapy treatments and/or hair services. This course will also not be for you if you only enjoy working on your own, are not willing to attend regularly and punctually and are unable to provide models for beauty therapy treatments and hair services. . This course will not suit you if you are unwilling to comply with our salon dress code.
