Course Entry Requirements

4 A*-C grades at GCSE or equivalent including a grade 4/D in GCSE English Language and preferably a Science subject.

Students must have passed the respective course at Level 2.

If you are interested in joining the College we will arrange a meeting with an experienced subject counsellor who will help you to choose courses that best suit your ambitions and achievements.

All entry requirement details are correct at the time of publication, September 2018, however, the College may need to make some changes by September 2019 in the light of student demand, staff availability and external factors beyond the College’s control.

What will I study?

You will build upon your existing experience and learn the more advanced theoretical and practical aspects of hairdressing. During the course, you will be taught both the theory and practice of working in the exciting hair industry, through topics that will include styling and dressing hair, colouring hair to create a variety of looks and hair colour correction.

Teaching will take place in both the classroom and in the College’s impressive and fully-equipped training salon, where you will develop your understanding of the practices and procedures needed for a career in hairdressing.

The course is broken down into a number of units, covering a wide range of salon procedures and practices.

The units that you must study are:

  • Hairdressing consultation services
  • Cut hair using a combination of techniques
  • Creatively colour and lighten hair
  • Creatively style and dress hair
  • Hair colour correction services

You must also study a range of optional units that could include:

  • Cut men’s hair using basic techniques
  • Creative hair extension services
  • Smoothing and strengthening systems
  • Create a variety of perming effects
  • Hair relaxing services
  • Specialist hair and scalp treatments
  • Creative hair design skills

Why should I study this course?

Hairdressing is an exciting industry based on cutting, colouring, styling and maintaining hair to improve how clients look and feel.  This is a one year course in which you will have the opportunity to become ready for work as a hairdresser with a high level of occupational competency.

How is the course assessed?

The assessment for the qualification will require you to perform practical assessments and also show your knowledge and understanding in assignments and an exam. You must also achieve the mandatory employer involvement for the qualification before a qualification grade can be given.

What will this course prepare me for?

Further education, employment and/or career progression in the hairdressing industry.

Private Study

As an approximate guideline, you should be practicing your hairdressing skills and developing your knowledge for around 9 hours per week. Ideally you will find regular work experience within the hair industry.

What materials will I need to purchase?

You must provide your own black tunic, black trousers and black, flat, enclosed, thick soled shoes. You will be expected to bring your own stationery (i.e. paper, pens etc).

Other essential products and equipment required for you to successfully complete your course will be provided for you. Many of our students find it beneficial to buy a college hairdressing kit and a text book in order to develop their skills and knowledge at home.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught the theory and practical aspects of hairdressing in both the classroom and our modern, well equipped training salon. Your enthusiastic teachers will help you to develop the essential skills and personal qualities needed for a successful performance in your working life.

City and Guilds Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Hairdressing is for you if:

You wish to develop your existing skills in hairdressing and enjoy learning in both practical and classroom environments.  This course is also for you if you are willing to give and receive hairdressing services and enjoy working with others. You should also be a positive and motivated person who is able to provide models for hairdressing services.

City and Guilds Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Hairdressing is not for you if:

You have no prior hairdressing qualifications and do not wish to give and receive hairdressing services. This course will also not be for you if you only enjoy working on your own, are not willing to attend regularly and punctually and are unable to provide models for hairdressing services. This course will not suit you if you are unwilling to comply with our salon dress code.
