Course Entry Requirements

Four 9 – 3 (A* – D) grades at GCSE or equivalent including English Language.

If you are interested in joining the College we will arrange a meeting with an experienced subject counsellor who will help you to choose courses that best suit your ambitions and achievements.

What will I study?

You will be trained in the College’s impressive training salon, where you will learn about the practices of women’s and men’s hairdressing. The course involves learning the theoretical and practical aspects of women’s and men’s hairdressing and you will develop your understanding of the practices and procedures needed to work in the exciting hair industry.

 The units that you must study are:

  • Follow the Health and Safety Practice in the salon
  • Client consultation for hair services
  • Shampoo and Condition the Hair and Scalp
  • Promote products and services to clients in a salon
  • Cut women’s hair
  • Colour and lighten hair
  • Cut men’s hair

You must also study a range of optional units that could include:

  • The Art of dressing hair
  • Styling men’s hair

As an approximate guideline you should be practising your hairdressing skills and developing your knowledge for around 8 hours per week. Ideally you will find regular work experience within the hairdressing industry.

Why should I study this course?

Trained hairdressers are always in demand and this is a one year course where you will gain the skills and experience for a fashionable future in the art of hair styling for both men and women.

You should have an interest in hairdressing and enjoy learning in both practical and classroom environments. This course is also for you if you are willing to give and receive hairdressing services and enjoy working with others. You should also be a positive and motivated person who is able to provide models for hairdressing services.

How is the course assessed?

The assessment for the qualification will require you to perform practical assessments and also show your knowledge and understanding in an exam. You must also achieve the mandatory employer involvement for the qualification before a qualification grade can be given.

What will this course prepare me for?

Further education, employment and/or career progression in the hairdressing industry.

Private Study

As an approximate guideline you should be practising your hairdressing skills and developing your knowledge for around 8 hours per week. Ideally you will find regular work experience within the hairdressing industry.

What materials will I need to provide?

You must provide your own black tunic, black trousers and black, flat, enclosed, thick soled shoes. You will be expected to bring your own stationery (i.e. paper, pens etc).

Other essential products and equipment required for you to successfully complete your course will be provided for you. Many of our students find it beneficial to buy a college hairdressing kit and a text book in order to develop their skills and knowledge at home.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught the theory and practical aspects of hairdressing in both the classroom and our modern, well equipped training salon. Your enthusiastic teachers will help you to develop the essential skills and personal qualities needed for a successful performance in your working life.

City and Guilds Level 2 Technical Certificate in Hairdressing is for you if:

You have an interest in hairdressing and enjoy learning in both practical and classroom environments.  This course is also for you if you are willing to give and receive hairdressing services and enjoy working with others.

You should be positive and motivated and understand the importance of adhering to the dress code and attending regularly and on time – all skills necessary for working in the field of hairdressing. You should also able to provide models for your hairdressing services.
