Course Entry Requirements

4 A*-C grades at GCSE or equivalent in 3 or more subjects including a minimum of grade 5/C in GCSE Mathematics and Science (or equivalent L2 Science course) and a minimum of grade 4/D in GCSE English Language.

If you are interested in joining the College we will arrange a meeting with an experienced subject counsellor who will help you to choose courses that best suit your ambitions and achievements.

All entry requirement details are correct at the time of publication, September 2018, however, the College may need to make some changes by September 2019 in the light of student demand, staff availability and external factors beyond the College’s control.

What skills do I need?

Why should I study this course?

Engineering covers a vast range of areas that affect how we live today. In this course we will show you how broad engineering is by teaching you across most of these areas. In this exciting course you will gain the knowledge and experience required when starting out on your career in engineering. It is a course that is split between time at the workshop, laboratory and the classroom.

Throughout your work on the qualification you will learn and experience a wide range of exciting and highly-skilled practical processes and theory work. You will also learn important workplace skills like interpreting engineering information correctly, so that you will be able to read design specifications in a workplace context. The BTEC Extended Diploma course is an ideal stepping stone to a university course in Engineering or going straight into an exciting and financially rewarding career.

How is the course assessed?

Most of the units are assessed in the classroom by the teacher. The engineering principles unit is assessed by an external exam.

What will this course prepare me for?

In East Yorkshire, Engineering is the biggest employment sector and it is growing all of the time. Some huge contracts have been awarded to multinational companies in the area and these have created lots of job opportunities. This course will provide you with an ideal qualification to progress into these jobs, or onto an Engineering course at university.

Private Study

The Extended Diploma in Engineering course is one where the work you do in the workshop and in the classroom is continually assessed. We will ask you to do private study if you have got behind with work or there are deadlines that you need to meet – it depends on the stage of the course and how close you are to meeting Merit and Distinction requirements!

What materials will I need to provide?

Due to the workshop element of the course all students will need to have a set of cotton overalls and a pair of steel toe-cap boots. These can be loaned from the engineering department or they can be purchased before you start the course.

How will I be taught?

A wide variety of teaching techniques will be used. In the workshop, you will generally be taught by the teacher demonstrating how to use the machinery. It definitely won’t be a case of just watching…you’ll soon be working on all of the machinery and be given tips on how to use it correctly and without any mistakes. You will also be taught in classroom situations – again with real life problems to make the work relevant to what happens in employment. You will also be using industry standard CAD software which is recommended by the majority of engineering companies. One thing you’ll always be able to say about the teaching – it will always be useful to working in Engineering once you leave College!
