Why should I study this course?

Money makes the world go around. You will find out exactly how with this fascinating course, which looks at how money is the driving force of human activity and behaviour. This academic course will help you learn about the UK economy. You will find out what it is, how it works and why the wellbeing of the economy is so important to all of us. The course will help develop the skills which employers’ value and expect from prospective workers of the future.

You will study different areas of economic theory and how that theory can be applied to real world examples. This two-year course is an ideal stepping stone to either a job in the business world or perhaps further study in an economics/business related field at university, such as finance or accounting.

What will I study?

The course will cover a range of subject areas, including:

  • Production, costs and revenue
  • The labour markets
  • The distribution of income and wealth, poverty and inequality

How is the course assessed?

This is a 100% examination based qualification, you will take three examinations in the final year.

What will the course prepare me for?

This course will give you excellent understanding of how the UK economy works and prepare you to find a job in one of the many sectors of the economy. You may also use the course as a means of securing a university place on one of the many economic/business related degree courses available.

Private study

You will be expected to complete at least 4 hours of private study each week. This time will enable you to complete your homework tasks and achieve your target grade. You will need to get into the habit of watching the news regularly to help you understand why economic events are so significant.

What materials will I need to provide?

Standard stationery items: a pen, a pencil, a ruler, a notepad and a calculator. This course also advises you to obtain a USB stick to help you with the completion of assignment/homework tasks.

How will I be taught?

You will experience a wide variety of learning activities, including the chance to take part in visits to local or regional businesses and hear from speakers who work in the real world. Staff will use examples of current economic events and issues to help you understand how the economy really works.

What are the course requirements?

Five 9 - 4 (A* - C) grades at GCSE including GCSE English Language and GCSE Mathematics at grade 4 (C).

If you are interested in joining the College we will arrange a meeting with an experienced subject counsellor who will help you to choose courses that best suit your ambitions and achievements.
