Why should I study this course?
If you like to help make people feel good, pampered and relaxed, then a career in the hair and beauty sector could be for you.
This one year course will suit you if you enjoy working with people and like to learn in both a practical and classroom environment.
What will I study?
You will be taught the theory and practical aspects of hairdressing and beauty therapy in both the classroom and our modern, well equipped training salons. You will learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the hair and beauty sector. These include shampoo and conditioning, styling women’s and men’s hair, nail art, skin care and health and safety.
The course is broken down into a number of units. The units that you must study are:
- Introduction to the Hair and Beauty sector
- Presenting a professional image in a salon
- Health and Safety in the salon
- Working with others
You must also study a range of optional units that may include:
- Introduction to the hair and beauty sector
- Presenting a professional image
- Health and safety
- Working with others
- Shampooing and conditioning hair
- Creating an image using temporary hair colour
- Styling women's hair
- Plaiting and Twisting
- Basic make up
- Themed face paint
- Nail art
- Styling men's hair

How is the course assessed?
50% practical / 50% coursework
The assessment will require you to perform practical tasks and also show your knowledge and understanding in assignments.
What will the course prepare me for?
After you have completed this Level 1 course you will be able to apply for the Level 2 Hairdressing OR the Level 2 Beauty Therapy course. Or you may wish to find work in the hair and beauty sector.
As an approximate guideline you should be practising your hairdressing and beauty therapy skills and developing your knowledge for around 8 hours per week. Ideally you will find regular work experience within the hair and beauty sector.
What materials will I need to provide?
You must provide your own black tunic, black trousers and flat, black, enclosed, thick soled shoes. Many of our students find it beneficial to buy a college beauty therapy and hairdressing kit and a text book in order to develop their skills and knowledge at home.
How will I be taught?
You will be taught the theory and practical aspects in both the classroom and our modern, well-equipped training salons. Your enthusiastic teachers will help you to develop the essential skills and personal qualities needed for a successful performance in your working life.

You have an interest in beauty therapy and hairdressing and enjoy learning in both practical and classroom environments. This course is also for you if you are willing to give and receive beauty therapy treatments and enjoy working with others.
You should be positive and motivated and understand the importance of adhering to the dress code and attending regularly and on time – all skills necessary for working in the field of beauty therapy and hair dressing.
