Overview

This course is for you if you are considering a career in the world of sport or if you would like to progress to university.

Using our sports facilities, this course will allow you to pursue the sporting success you desire. You will gain an insight into various vocational aspects of sport from practical and theoretical approaches. You will also work towards understanding performance and excellence in sport through themes that include fitness testing, tactical skills, coaching, anatomy, physiology and nutrition. Your sporting ability will be challenged and you will take part in practical assessments with the opportunity to compete in national competitions.

You will have the chance to obtain qualifications in a range of sports coaching and leadership courses. Lessons will make use of the college’s Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) and fitness suite, and you will also benefit from the expertise of guest speakers from professional clubs and organisations and trips to national centres of excellence.

What will you learn?

In your first year you will cover:

• Assessing risk in sport – including legislation, legal issues and the importance of following procedures to ensure safe participation for everyone.

• Anatomy and physiology – looking in depth at the major body systems in the body and understanding the structure and function of these.

• Physiology of fitness – developing understanding of how the body systems respond to short-term exercise and how they adapt to long-term training.

• Fitness testing – including the components of fitness and safe and standardised delivery of a range of fitness tests.

• Psychology in sport – investigating theories of motivation, personality and arousal and how these affect the mind-set of a performer.

• Technical and tactical skills in sport – including analysing the skills, techniques and tactics of a chosen sport and analysing own performance against set criteria.

• Fitness training and programming – including methods of training and planning safe and effective training programmes for a specific client.

• Rules and regulations – investigating the rules and regulations of a range of sports and applying these in practical settings.

• Practical team sports – demonstrating a range of skills, techniques and tactics and identifying strengths and areas for improvement of your own and others’ performance.

• Athlete’s lifestyle – investigating the life of professional athletes and looking at strategies used to maximise professional careers.

In your second year you will study:

• Sports coaching – planning and delivering safe and effective coaching sessions in your chosen sport.

• Exercise, health and lifestyle – investigating the key factors that can impact on health, strategies that can be used to overcome these and planning lifestyle improvement plans.

• Instructing physical activity and exercise – including planning and delivering a safe and effective group exercise session and planning training programmes for specific clients.

• Sports injuries – investigating causes of injuries, the impact that these have physically and mentally and planning safe and effective rehabilitation programmes for specific athletes.

• Analysis of sports performance – focusing on elite and club athletes and using performance profiles to improve skills and techniques.

• Talent identification and development in sport – including analysing current talent identification and development programmes and planning your own talent ID programme for a specific sport.

• Organising sports events – investigating different types of sporting events and the roles and responsibilities of these to plan and deliver a sports event.

• Current issues in sports – including the history of sport and the impact of media and technology.

• Sports nutrition – including research on the key components of a balanced diet, the role of hydration and effects on performance and planning diets for specific athletes.

    You must have four or more GCSE at grades 9-4 or equivalent in three or more subjects. You will also need a grade 3 or higher in GCSE English Language.

    This course will provide you with the opportunity to hear from academics and industry professionals regarding pathways in Sport and careers that would be available to you. You will also get the chance to take part in trips, including our trip to Malta with the Advanced Colleges Trust.

    A qualification in Sport has many benefits and is a recognised qualification which will prepare you for future work in the sports and leisure industry or progression onto university.

  • Outcomes Arrow down

    Students who complete a qualification in Sport go on to a wide variety of jobs. These can include: Personal Trainer, Sports Coach, Physiotherapist, Fitness Center Manager, Professional Athlete or Teacher, to name a few.
