Physics is a necessity for further study of Physics, Astronomy, and Engineering courses. It is also a recommended course for those who wish to study Maths, Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary studies and most medical courses in Higher Education. It is an extremely well regarded subject as it shows you have the skills to analyse problems, prepare and implement solutions. It will help develop an analytical mind and most employers and universities really respect and look for these skills.
With this course you will also get the opportunity to participate in a University of Hull curriculum enhancement project on the astrophysics of star birth and death.

What will I study?
Year One Units:
- The Foundations of Physics covers the basic skills needed to study physics at advanced level.
- Forces and Motion looks at how objects move and what causes this to happen. It also looks at how materials behave under stress.
- Electrons, Waves & Particles looks at basic electrical circuits, different types of waves and how these scientific models can be used to explain the world around us.
Year Two Units
- The Newtonian World develops the work from the first year in mechanics including how objects rotate and oscillate backwards and forwards. It also looks at how gases behave and how heat energy affects materials.
- Frontiers of Modern Physics introduces the ideas of Electromagnetism, Capacitors and Radioactivity.
- You will then study three areas where the physics you have studied is used: Medical Imaging, Particle Physics and Astro Physics.
How is the course assessed?
You will take 3 examinations at the end of year two based on the full two years of work. These are the only examinations that count towards the final A level grade. There will also be a practical endorsement qualification which will be assessed on your practical work throughout the two years.
What will the course prepare me for?

As with other A Level courses in college, the expectation in A Physics is that you would do 3-4 hours of Physics study per week in your own time. Homework is set on a weekly basis and is marked promptly, so that you always have a good understanding of your progress.
What materials will I need to provide?
The only things we ask you to bring are standard stationery items: a pen, a pencil and a ruler will do! You will also need your own scientific calculator as this enables you to develop the skills needed to use your own calculator.
How will I be taught?
You will have 4.5 hours of Physics on your timetable and will have one teacher in the first year and a single teacher in the second year. The lessons have a lot of creative ideas in them and there is a really good mixture of individual work, paired work and group work. We have a regular textbook, but lessons are practical and develop ideas from observations made from practical experiments.

What are the course requirements?
Five 9 - 4 (A*-C) grades at GCSE including a grade 4 (C) in GCSE English Language. A minimum of a grade 5 in either GCSE Physics, Chemistry or Biology or a double 5 in General Science. A minimum of a grade 6 (B) in GCSE Mathematics, BTEC Level 2 Distinction may qualify.
