Why should I study this course?

The Public Services industry is one of the largest employers in the country. It is a vibrant, vocational course which has both practical and theoretical elements. In choosing Public Services you will gain confidence and important employability skills.

You will also have the opportunity to undertake a variety of experiences, meet a range of teams that work within the public sector and have the chance to gain first-hand experience and knowledge of the services.

What will I study?

You will study a wide range of subjects which will give you understanding and skills in: human behaviour, citizenship, health and fitness, law, outdoor activities, leadership, discipline, expedition skills, teamwork and more.

You will have practical, directed sport and fitness sessions to develop your physical fitness as well as preparing you for public service selection and work.

How is the course assessed?

You will undertake continuous assessment of practical and academic projects and assignments. The visits to and presentations from the services are assessed and are a compulsory part of your course and your grade.

What will the course prepare me for?

This course will prepare you for a career in the public sector and uniformed service occupations, including the Police, Fire Service, Army, Navy, RAF, Coastguard and many office-based government jobs. You could also progress onto university, with a wide range of subjects to specialise in, such as Law, Criminology, Peace Studies or Sociology.

Private study

You must take part in independent private study on a regular basis. You will be given regular homework tasks to enhance your learning experience and enable you to achieve the high grades required for further study or employment.

What materials will I need to provide?

You will need a file, paper and pens for classroom work but you will also need sports kit for the practical classes.

How will I be taught?

You will attend lessons, practical sessions and situational activities - where you will be assessed in challenging situations. You will be expected to take part in self-directed study and research. Your lessons will consist of group, individual and paired work. You will have information delivered by specialist teaching staff and your lessons will be highly differentiated to your needs. You will have practical, directed sport and fitness sessions to develop your physical fitness as well as preparing you for public service selection and work.

You will need lots of skills, knowledge and expertise to succeed in the service you choose. This course will help you develop all these qualities and give you an introduction to careers within the Public Services.

What are the course requirements?

Four 9 – 4 (A*-C) grades at GCSE or equivalent in 3 or more subjects including a minimum of a grade 4 (C) in GCSE English Language.

If you are interested in joining the College, we will arrange a meeting with an experienced subject counsellor who will help you to choose courses that best suit your ambitions and achievements.
