Overview

Choose this course if you are keen to communicate in Spanish at a higher level, are interested in the Spanish-speaking world, enjoy travel and want a qualification that is highly regarded by both employers and universities. Students can progress to careers as tour guides, interpreters, translators, travel agents and teachers to name but a few.

Spanish is spoken in 21 countries. Around 400 million people speak Spanish as a native language, second only to Mandarin Chinese. There are 500 million speakers worldwide.

The skills and qualifications gained from studying Spanish at A Level will put you at an advantage when competing for jobs in our multilingual global society.

What will you learn?

The subject content of the course can be divided into three sections:

Social issues and trends

You will study the following in relation to at least one Spanish speaking country:

• Aspects of Hispanic society – modern and traditional values, cyberspace, and equal rights

• Multiculturalism – immigration, racism, integration

Political and artistic culture

You will study the following trends:

• Artistic culture in the Hispanic world

• Aspects of political life in the Hispanic world

Literacy texts and films

You will study either one text and one film or two texts from a given list.

You will also need to show an interest in current affairs and having an interest in the culture of Spain and the Spanish-speaking world would be a great advantage.

This course is for you if you are keen to communicate in Spanish at a higher level, are interested in the Spanish-speaking world and enjoy travel. The qualification is highly regarded by both employers and universities, so will suit both progression routes.

Entry Requirements & Other Info
  • Entry Requirements Arrow down

    You must have:

    • A minimum of five GCSE grades 9-4 and a GCSE average of 5.3

    • A grade 4 or higher in GCSE English Language

    • A grade 4 or higher in GCSE Spanish

  • Experiences Arrow down

    This course will provide you with the opportunity to explore Spanish as a language both inside and outside the classroom. You will be given the chance to put your newly learned language skills to good use on our trip to Spain, where you can explore the culture to better understand the language. You will also be given the chance to participate in weekly conversation classes, where you can practice your spoken language skills with other students.

  • Progression Arrow down

    Spanish lends itself well as a basis for a degree in Spanish or another foreign language. It can also help with degrees in Travel and Tourism or Translation, or even foreign literature.

  • Outcomes Arrow down

    Students who complete a qualification in Spanish go on to a wide variety of jobs. These can include: Interpreter, Translator, Private Tutor, Tour Manager, Academic Researcher or Teacher, to name a few.
