We have become become the first sixth form college in the UK to be awarded Microsoft Showcase College status following our digital learning transformation. We led the way in online learning for schools and colleges during the remote learning periods in 2020 and 2021, implementing a transformative digital platform.

The Microsoft Showcase College award recognises the College’s commitment to educational transformation, which includes vision and innovation in teaching, learning and assessment, computational and critical thinking, creativity and collaboration, and a willingness to promote a growth mindset among educators and students. We have worked closely with Microsoft to lead innovation in education transformation by mentoring other local and international educational providers – supporting them to introduce successful online learning practices during what has been a uniquely challenging time for the sector.

So far, we have in excess of 1,500 users on our digital network and we have delivered 370,000 individual coaching sessions focused on online learning to other educational providers. The college has also provided over 175 digital devices to support students with their remote learning.

Mark Crofts, Headteacher at Withernsea High School – one of the schools benefiting from the dedicated coaching opportunities we offered – commented,

“We have learnt so much from the online training delivered by Wilberforce. The impact has been phenomenal; we have taken a big leap forwards in online learning because of it.

We’re very much looking forward to continuing out collaboration with Wilberforce Sixth Form College and are hugely excited by the possibilities that online learning poses for our school’s future.”

Spurred on by the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, we also knew that our innovative digital platform would provide a semblance of normality for students, as well as enabling them to develop vital digital skills in preparation for entering the world of work.

Students can upload their work seamlessly through the platform, ensuring it can be marked consistently and accurately – vital in the lead-up to assessment periods. Lessons can be accessed in real-time, or students can catch up on content they’ve missed via digital recordings, providing flexibility for those who may have other responsibilities.

Colin Peaks, our Principal, said,

“We are delighted to have been selected as a Microsoft Showcase College. It is a testament to the hard work and dedication our staff and students have invested in embedding digital learning at the college.

Staff expertise with educational technology means the College is now recognised as a national leader and is well-placed to ensure that learning is of the highest quality, and accessible for all. We are successfully transforming and enhancing the teaching and learning experience, and I am confident that all our future students will have the opportunities and the integral digital life skills necessary for the world of work following their studies with Wilberforce.

We are looking forward to continuing working closely with Microsoft to lead innovation and further transform learning.”

As one of the top-performing colleges in the UK, Wilberforce also became one of only 18 schools and colleges across the country to be named as ‘EdTech Demonstrators’ by the Department of Education (DfE) earlier this year.

As an accredited Microsoft Showcase College and top-performing sixth form college in the Humber region, we’re leading the way in developing the digital-ready talent of tomorrow. We encourage employers to invest in our students, to invest in a brighter, digital-ready future for your organisation.
