Advanced Level Results at Wilberforce 6th Form College 2018 Best results in College’s 30 year history!
For the fifth year running, Wilberforce Sixth Form College is celebrating the best exam results achieved by its students since the College opened. Advanced level achievement stands at an outstanding 99.2%. 22 A level courses secured a 100% pass rate as did 62 of our 67 courses.
College Principal David Cooper says ‘This outstanding student achievement demonstrates the qualities of the young people in this region. We have heard much of the challenges that the new reformed A Levels posed for the young people and those that support them. These results show that our students and staff have met those challenges head-on. They are a testament both to the mature academic prowess of our students, and to their qualities of resilience and determination.
The story these results tell is of intellectually gifted young people with the sheer application to turn that ability into life changing qualifications. I’m proud and humbled by their achievement, but also delighted for their parents who’ve supported them throughout and the staff who’ve worked tirelessly to make these achievements a reality.
He adds ‘I am retiring from the College this summer and I can’t think of a better leaving present than the achievements of these young people. Ofsted visited us earlier this year and their verdict was that the College was close to being outstanding. These results reinforce that judgement. They are a great starting point for my successor as Principal Colin Peaks, who is himself a former student of the College, and I am sure that he will take the College on to the next exciting stage of its development. As the city and region enter upon a new phase of economic and cultural growth, our young people have shown that they have the intellectual gifts and creativity to meet that challenge. I’m confident that our future is safe in their hands.’
Amongst the many successes at the East Hull College is Ryan Smith who, with three A grades including two at A*, is going on to study Theoretical Physics at the University of Leeds. Rowan Humphreys has achieved an A* in Mathematics and an A in Further Maths both in one year, and is to study Computer Science at the University of Durham. Chloe Lavelle’s A* in Biology and A in Maths will see her study Human Biology and Mathematics at the University of Keele. Thalia Slade gained a great A* & an A in Textiles and Fine Art together with a Distinction * in Business, taking her to study Business Management at Leeds Beckett University. Poppy Mitchell and James Todd have achieved triple Distinction* in Public Services and Engineering respectively. David Cooper finally comments ‘Wilberforce Sixth Form College is entering its 30th year since its foundation in 1988. Wilberforce graduates now play leading roles in medicine, science, engineering, law, and the arts, as well as education, both as teachers and leading academics. The results gained today are life changing for many of our students, opening up routes to leading universities and top professions’.
