“Who poisoned Alan Rutland?” was the task set for a team of our Year 1 Chemistry students in the regional heat of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Schools’ Analyst Competition.
Sam Brown, Ryan Smith and Kirsty Hanson investigated the case, carrying out undergraduate analytical chemistry techniques at the University of Hull, competing against teams from other colleges, such as Hymers, Hull Collegiate and Wyke. Our students stood out as enthusiastic, expert organisers, and were good at articulating their ideas. Indeed, they came to the correct conclusion that Alan had taken a dose of drug that had disagreed with him. The team came second and weren’t too far behind Hymers.
