Wilberforce College donates £500 to help feed local families

We were delighted this weekend to present a cheque for £500 to Hull Unity Shop, to help support the fantastic work they do supplying food packs to families that are struggling to support themselves during Lockdown. Wilberforce staff including Teacher Mandy Fall and Liaison Officer Emily Lucid, also took time to help deliver the packs across Hull.

The packs consist of donations of food, toiletries (including feminine hygiene products) and cleaning products from local individuals and groups, with the majority of the produce coming from Hull and Humber FairShare scheme. FareShare is the UK’s national network of charitable food redistributors, made up of 17 independent organisations. Together, they take good quality surplus food from right across the food industry and get it to almost 11,000 frontline charities and community groups, one of which is the Unity Shop on Alfred Gelder Street in the city centre.

The packs often contain short-dated food and surplus fruit and veg that would otherwise go to waste with much of this coming from the large supermarket chains. After all the discussion in the news this week about uncertainty around free school meals and inadequate ‘food parcels’ it’s heartening to hear that these food boxes contain a mix of fresh fruit and veg, food cupboard ‘staples’ and treats – all as and when available and go to those who need this help the most.

Wilberforce Teacher Mandy Fall has been involved with the initiative for some time and explained:
“The Unity Shop makes a donation to FairShare and any monetary donations will support this cycle of events and to ‘top up’ shortages of produce. FairShare delivers the products/produce each Friday and the food boxes are packed ready for Saturday deliveries.  Currently there are approximately 50 food boxes delivered each week, with the number increasing rapidly in the last couple of months. I’ve had 4 requests in the past 48 hours.”

“I would like to thank all our students and staff that have so far contributed food and products, and donated money to this extremely important cause.”

If you would like to donate as little as £2 a month please contact Mandy on maf@wilberforce.ac.uk for more details.
