SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS

If your son or daughter has an issue affecting their studies, their finances or their life – no matter how big or small – they’re likely to find the answer at Student Services.

STUDENT SERVICES

Our experienced and supportive Student Services team have lots of information about student transport, financial help and attendance issues, and are on hand to offer support and advice should students need it. We also have a qualified counsellor available to offer support to students who may be experiencing personal problems. They will listen to your son or daughter and support them for as long as they need.

STUDY SUPPORT

If at any point students feel as though they’re struggling with any aspect of their course, our Study Support Tutors are available to help. Based in the Study Centre, our team of Study Support Tutors offer individual or small group tuition, as well as support in the classroom. The Study Centre is a valuable resource for all students. It’s a quiet working area at the heart of the college, which provides access to computers and subject resources for private study. Time with a Study Support Tutor is available to all students at every ability level within the college and covers a variety of skills, including essay writing, planning, organisation, interview techniques and functional skills, as well as general help with coursework. We aim to help your son or daughter achieve the best results on their courses.

TUTORS

Every student is allocated a tutor to ensure they make good progress whilst at the college. Your tutor will meet you individually once every four weeks for a Learning Progress Meeting. This flexible meeting focuses on your needs at the time, such as how you are settling in at college or your university application. You can also arrange to talk with your tutor in-between scheduled meetings, and throughout the year you’ll have additional group tutorials. We developed this system in response to student feedback, so that students can talk more about their own progress and benefit from advice from trained professionals.

CURRICULUM SUPPORT MENTORS

To complement the Study Support Tutors who provide additional support to students, we also have a team of 10 Curriculum Support Mentors. These are all ex-Wilberforce students currently studying at the University of Hull. They attend one day per week and provide support to individuals and small groups of students across the curriculum. Not only do the mentors provide invaluable subject-specific support, plus help with organisation, planning and exam revision, but they are excellent role models to students who themselves might be contemplating university study.
