Joel McDermott

Joel Ryan McDermott is an exhibiting artist, multi-award-winning filmmaker, creative director and lecturer. The film ‘Calling For Change’, written and directed by Joel with music by The Irrepressibles, won Best Music Video at the Sea & Beach Film Festival 2020 In Santa Pola Spain, an Excellence Award at the LGBTQ Unbordered International film Festival 2020 in the USA, was a network round finalist at the Manchester Lift off Film Festival 2020, and received a runner-up award for best score at the London Rocks Film Festival 2020. Joel’s work is centred around the role of community in British culture and is concerned with concepts of silence, violence, masculinity, mental health, cultural identity and class.  

Joel is an established creative director and educator with over 16 years’ experience teaching in both further and higher education, and he was previously Academic leader at Croydon School of Art and Head of the Creative Industries Department at Scarborough School of Art. As a creative director Joel has worked as a production manager at Latitude Festival and at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Joel received his Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Fine Art at the University of Lincoln, his teacher training qualification from London Metropolitan University, and his Fine Art Masters specialising in auto ethnographical and ethnographical filmmaking at Leeds Arts University.  

Alongside Joel’s ongoing creative practice, he is a committed educationalist who believes in helping other people develop the necessary knowledge, skills, behaviours and confidence to enable them to progress to the next stage of their creative working lives. Joel’s past learners have gone onto secure places in leading national and international universities, receive selections for exhibitions awards and commendations, and secure exciting creative industries jobs.
