Former Wilberforce College student, Ashley Hedges, was one of 15 young people chosen from more than 300 applicants to win a scholarship worth £15,000 to study accountancy with Kaplan Financial.
His course started in September and he will have the opportunity to complete his Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) qualification followed by further training to become a qualified accountant.

We caught up with Ashley to find out about how he’s getting on now and his time at Wilberforce.

Can you sum up your experience of studying at Wilberforce in three words?

Confidence-building, encouraging and supportive.

What did you study at Wilberforce College?

I achieved A Levels in Business Studies (A*), Mathematics (B), PE (B) and an AS Level in IT. I played for the College rugby team. I won the Kaplan Scholarship for Hull 2013 and I’m now working at Forrester Boyd Robson Chartered Accountants who give me day release to college. It’s good to be able to put what you learn at college straight into practice at work.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Wilberforce?

I really enjoyed taking part in the Young Enterprise project and developing my teamwork skills. It really helped with my scholarship interview as I could talk about the business experience it gave me.

What are your future ambitions?

I am currently studying AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) at Level 3. I have already passed two exams, and hope that once I have achieved this I will move onto further qualifications such as ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) or ACA (Association of Chartered Accountants). So if all goes to plan I could be a chartered accountant in five years.
