Current student at Wilberforce
Second year student, Chloe Casey, recently shared her thoughts with us about her positive experience at Wilberforce. She came to us from The Marvell College to study A Level Law, A Level Psychology and BTEC Business and has recently won the Enterprise Award at the Wilberforce Student Achievement Awards Evening 2020. These prestigious awards recognise our extremely high performing students who have gone that extra mile, both in and out of their studies.
Over to Chloe…..
I came to Wilberforce College as the course they offered massively appealed to me. I found the careers team really helpful at one of the open days and they gave me advice on what steps I should make to get in to the industry I want to get in to. It is also really close to where I live so it means if I am caught up with work I can pop home during my free periods.
After a lot of research, I discovered that I really want to work in Marketing. I love studying Law and Psychology, but I like the challenging fast pace of the marketing industry. In my first year I took part in the college’s Young Enterprise Student Company Programme where I had the opportunity to be the marketing director of a small business. Doing this allowed me to see how much I liked this type of role and it gave me an insight into what marketing is like. I gained skills such as being able to work in a team, communication skills and being able to work independently. I have also gained so much confidence.
I hope to get an apprenticeship with a marketing agency, but my back up plan is university. I’ve been lucky enough so far to be offered a place at Hull, Leeds Becket, Manchester Metropolitan and Sheffield Hallam. But I think I’d choose Hull or Leeds.
When applying for university, I had a lot of help from my tutor and teachers with my personal statement as well as even just deciding if I wanted to apply for university. Sarah Didsbury, who is the college Careers Manager gave me a lot of guidance to help me find out how to get a career in marketing and gave me lots of advice in to what types of apprenticeships to look for and where to look for them.
I have really enjoyed my experience so far at Wilberforce College, I’ve made some great friends, enjoyed lessons and the teachers are all really helpful and they all want the best for their students. I think the main thing I have taken so far is the experiences I gained from the enrichment opportunities at the college, the Young Enterprise Student Company Programme was one of the best things I have done and I hope it is something that will stand out on my CV in the future when applying for jobs.
