ESTHER ATTENDED WILBERFORCE BETWEEN 2005 AND 2007 AND FOUND HER TIME POSITIVE. HAVING FAILED HER EXAMS AT ANOTHER SIXTH FORM, ESTHER APPLIED TO WILBERFORCE HOPING TO IMPROVE HER GRADES IN A DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENT. AND SHE DID!
Esther puts this down to the positive atmosphere, she says ‘Wilberforce gave me a chance, gave me friends even though I knew no-one and gave me the confidence to succeed.’ She also mentions the strong female role models she had whilst at college, especially her computing teacher at the time, who taught her ‘how to be independent and how to be assertive without being aggressive’. She feels this was important considering the male dominated subjects she was studying. These were skills she also tried to teach to girls at Kingswood High during her 2nd year when she became involved in mentoring those who were hoping to study male dominated subjects like herself.
After achieving A-Levels in Physics, Maths & Computer Science at Wilberforce, Esther went on to study Automotive and Mechanical Engineering at Bradford University, something she has dreamed of doing since she was 10 years old. Her goal was to design car engines and to gain more experience of this she spent four days at the Ford factory in Belgium in her first year. She even got the chance to drive cars on the control test track, even though she could only reach a speed of 165mph because of the poor weather conditions! She won the Jowett Scholarship Award given out by her university, which meant she had come amongst the top six students in her year and received £500 at a formal presentation for her efforts.
Esther’s career plans changed after she did a years’ work experience at Siemens in Poole, Dorest as she became very interested in possibilities of renewable energy. After gaining a high 2:1 BEng Hons at Bradford she continued her studies and gained a distinction in her MSc. Her dissertation included designing a small wind turbine. In September 2012 Esther started a Phd course at Hull University. This is both challenging and exciting as she is now developing tidal turbines that will hopefully have an impact in the renewable energy sector.
