Football Performance Analyst

Our former BTEC Level 3 in Sport student Josh Appleyard has followed his dreams of achieving a career in Sport.  Here he tells us about his journey from studying at Wilberforce, where he achieved a Distinction* in his studies, to becoming the Lead First Team Performance Analyst at Hull City Football Club.

I always wanted to work in professional sport in some capacity. Growing up I loved football, whether it was playing or watching the game, and during my time at college I began coaching a local Sunday league team. I think it’s a dream for the vast majority of boys growing up to either be a footballer or work within a professional football environment. When I left college, I attended the University of Hull where I completed a degree in Sports Coaching and Performance.  On finishing my undergraduate degree, I was fortunate enough to continue onto a Master’s degree in Performance Analysis which I have just completed.

I really enjoyed my time at Wilberforce. It was the foundations of where my career began, and the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise allowed me to explore the various career paths which you can go down. Throughout my time at college the atmosphere was really relaxed and all of the tutors were supportive and encouraging when it came to finishing coursework or completing tasks. The enrichment opportunities the college also provides are a fantastic way to meet new people and take part in activities that you enjoy.

My time at college allowed me to develop a number of life skills, the main one of which was time management. Balancing my education alongside a part-time job, and having a social life, it was vital I got my time management right. This is now a vital skill in my current role, as I constantly have deadlines to complete work for coaches and players, and have to ensure I’m as efficient with my time as possible.
