Kate Barkworth

Kate joined Wilberforce ten years ago. After completing her A-levels, she travelled around Europe as part of her International Business degree. She is now working for the Mayor of London, and has even organised events in Kensington Palace!

Studied at Wilberforce: 2001 – 2003

WHAT DID YOU STUDY WHILE AT WILBERFORCE AND WHAT WERE YOUR RESULTS?

AS Level – Psychology, A – Level Business Studies, German, French & General Studies, Grades B-D.

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE WILBERFORCE COLLEGE AS YOUR NEXT STEP?

I wanted to meet new people and gain new experiences whilst studying at the same time. Wilberforce offered that.

FONDEST MEMORY OF COLLEGE?

The other people I met, the German exchange programme and Anna our German tutor, who was fantastic

DID YOU ALWAYS HAVE A CAREER IN MIND OR WAS IT AN IDEA THAT EVOLVED FROM COLLEGE?

I knew I wanted to travel and gain experience working abroad. My A-Levels in languages and business studies at Wilberforce helped drive that. In turn, working overseas and speaking other languages then helped me get the job I do today!

WHAT DID YOU DO AFTER COLLEGE?

I studied International Business with Spanish and German at Sheffield Hallam University, where as part of that degree I spent six months studying in Asturias, Northern Spain and one year working for Blaupunkt overseas; spending six months in Madrid, Spain then moving to their head office in Hildesheim, Germany for another six months. After University I spent two summers working at a summer camp in Pennsylvania, USA organising a recreation programme for up to 400 campers a week. I moved to three years ago, where I started working for a welfare to work programme, building relationships with stakeholders in the North London area. I have spent the last two and a bit years working for the Mayor of London’s promotional agency, working with foreign owned companies helping them invest or expand in London. I was recruited initially to help build relationships with large foreign multinationals in London and organised high profile events at major venues (e.g. Bank of England, Kensington Palace), with high profile speakers (Mayor of London, Minister for Trade Investment and Business, Country Ambassadors) to drive new relationships with executives. I was then promoted internally after six months to manage a mixed portfolio of inward investment accounts from the European and North American regions and to help drive new inward investment relationships.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS TIME, CAREER WISE?

Who knows!? – I would love to work for an organisation such as the EU, and I would even look at living abroad again if the opportunity came around

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND WILBERFORCE TO OTHER STUDENTS, AND WHY?

Yes, it gives you a chance to experience higher education outside of school and you meet some fantastic people.
