Laura Jackman studied at Wilberforce between 1999 and 2001, and loved her time here! She is currently working on her PhD after studying Biology at university.
School: South Holderness
Studied at Wilberforce: 1999 – 2001
WHAT DID YOU STUDY WHILE AT WILBERFORCE AND WHAT WERE YOUR RESULTS?
I studied at Wilberforce College between 1999 and 2001 and left with 4 A-Levels: Biology (B), Maths (A), Physics (B) and General Studies (A)
WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE WILBERFORCE COLLEGE AS YOUR NEXT STEP?
The reason that I chose Wilberforce above the other colleges in Hull was it offered everything I wanted from a college, the courses plus a different set-up from school. I can honestly say I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Wilberforce. Having hated school, Wilberforce was a breath of fresh air in comparison! The main difference is that everybody there wanted to learn, a complete difference from school lessons which were often disrupted by those unwilling to learn. Everyone is accepted for who they are and as a result the learning environment is relaxed with the tutors treating you as an adult. My fondest memories of college are meeting new people; discovering my love of science thanks to my tutors; hanging out with friends in the common room and generally having a happy two years there!
WHAT DID YOU DO AFTER COLLEGE?
After college I went on to study Biology at the University of Hull. I didn’t have a particular career in mind at that stage, I just knew I enjoyed science and so decided to do what I enjoyed! After university I worked for a year as a medical laboratory assistant in the Microbiology department at Hull Royal Infirmary before moving to Sheffield in 2006 to take up a research technicians post at the University of Sheffield. In 2007 I was given the opportunity to study for a PhD part-time alongside my technician role. I’m now writing my thesis which I hope to complete in early 2012.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS TIME?
In 10 years time I hope to still be in academic research, but as post-doctoral research associate continuing my research into coronary heart disease. Would you recommend Wilberforce to other students, and why? I would, most definitely, recommend Wilberforce College to other students! I had a fantastic time there and can say it really did set me on my way to the job I’m doing (and loving) today. My tutors enabled me to discover a subject I loved rather than just ‘liked’ and inspired me to go onto you university to study what I loved…Biology!
