WHAT DID YOU STUDY WHILE AT WILBERFORCE AND WHAT WERE YOUR RESULTS?

I studied A Levels in Law, English Language, Business Studies, Psychology and General Studies and achieved A grades in all subjects.

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE WILBERFORCE COLLEGE AS YOUR NEXT STEP?

I chose Wilberforce to study my A Levels as it offered a wide variety of subjects which my school didn’t. I also felt that it catered for A Level students much better than other places and would provide me with the resources I needed to do well at this stage of my academic life.

FONDEST MEMORY OF COLLEGE?

My business studies teacher calling my friend ‘Tony’ for two years. His name is Tom.

DID YOU ALWAYS HAVE A CAREER IN MIND?

I always knew I wanted to be a corporate lawyer from a very young age and I chose my A Level subjects with this in mind, knowing that those particular subjects would give me knowledge and skills I would find useful prior to embarking on a law degree.

WHAT DID YOU DO AFTER COLLEGE?

As soon as I left Wilberforce I started my law degree at Manchester University, graduating with an LLB in July 2008. After university, I completed a Legal Practice Course and a Masters in Professional Legal Practice. I was very pleased to secure a training contract to be become a lawyer with Herbert Smith LLP, a global commercial law firm and one of the leading firms in the UK legal market. Whilst at Herbert Smith I have spent six months in Banking Litigation and Regulatory working largely for The Royal Bank of Scotland, six months in Corporate working on leading transactions for JJB Sports plc, six months in Finance, arranging financing and restructuring for Moorfield Group and Tui Travel plc and 6 months in-house with Man Group plc, the world’s largest hedge fund. I am due to qualify in March 2012 when I will be admitted to the roll as a Solicitor of England and Wales. Upon qualification (following an extended holiday) I will be re-joining Herbert Smith LLP as a fully qualified associate lawyer in their Corporate Finance practice.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS’ TIME, CAREER WISE?

Early retirement?! The legal professional is very dynamic and fast moving, so it is hard to say where I will be 10 years from now. I hope to gain more experience rising through the ranks to become a senior lawyer and I will see what career opportunities arise for me along the way.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND WILBERFORCE TO OTHER STUDENTS, AND WHY?

I would recommend Wilberforce to other student who are keen to pursue their ambition and who have a drive to achieve. The college offers a wide variety of courses so young people should take the opportunities that it can present to gain good qualifications and a step towards a brighter future.

WHO’S YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION?

On a daily basis my mum is my biggest inspiration – an amazing mother, a successful career-woman and always my biggest supporter!
