WHAT DID YOU STUDY WHILE AT WILBERFORCE AND WHAT WERE YOUR RESULTS?

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE WILBERFORCE COLLEGE AS YOUR NEXT STEP?

Experiences at Taster Days was the main factor in my choosing Wilberforce. I like all other Y10s and Y11s attended both Wilberforce and Hull Colleges on Taster Days and I like the smaller community feel of Wilberforce. Everything at other colleges seemed a lot more anonymous but Wilberforce I got the impression that students were known and cared about.

FONDEST MEMORY OF COLLEGE?

Hanging out the common room with friends, being able to stay with High School friends and make new ones. Results Day- knowing that I had achieved what I wanted and been accepted to University! Seeing my friends celebrating too!

DID YOU ALWAYS HAVE A CAREER IN MIND OR WAS IT AN IDEA THAT EVOLVED FROM COLLEGE?

When I started college I wanted to be a doctor but that ambition was waning and I wasn’t sure it was for me anymore….during my studies at Wilberforce I was asked to give a presentation by my History tutor who after presenting it asked if I had ever thought of teaching- I almost laughed in her face as I thought it was a ridiculous notion as I am not the most patient person. But it was an idea that stayed and one I ultimately followed.

WHAT DID YOU DO AFTER COLLEGE?

I went from Wilberforce to the University of Hull to study BA (Hons) History. I loved being a student and worked and played hard to achieve a 2:1. After graduation I went on to do a Secondary PGCE in History which I passed and then went on to get a job teaching History at Portland School in Worksop. After completing my NQT year I was appointed as the Deputy Progress Leader for KS4 which gave me extensive leadership experience. I left Portland at the end of the current academic year (July 2011) as I will be taking up a position at a school in Doha, Qatar. I am looking forward to the experience of working overseas- something I never thought I would get the opportunity to do!

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS TIME, CAREER WISE?

In 10 years I hope to still be teaching. I hope to have worked in a number of different countries, experiencing their culture and language. I hope to be an Assistant Head responible for the Pastoral arena.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND WILBERFORCE TO OTHER STUDENTS, AND WHY?

I would definitely recommend Wilberforce to students! I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Wilberforce. If a student wants to feel like they belong, like the staff care and wants their independence in their studies then Wilberforce is the place to go. The best bit for me was the fact that it wasn’t attached to my high school. It gave me a chance to spread my wings and grow up as I had to be responsible for myself. It was the perfect stepping stone to University.
