EARTH DAY 🌎🌱
On this #EarthDay2024 it is important for everyone to reflect on the impacts human activity is having on our planet. The major challenges we all face are:
1️⃣Climate Change and the resultant sea level rise
2️⃣Pollution, particular of plastics
3️⃣Habitat destruction and loss of biodiversity
At Wilberforce we are trying to mitigate human impacts on several fronts. Increasing the number of plants on site therefore actively making our campus greener, is helping to reduce our carbon footprint. Growing more plants in our numerous living walls (that take up less space), in our growers and on our field areas will capture carbon and also increase biodiversity. More flowering plants attract insects such as bees and butterflies which will in turn attract birds. 🌿🦋🐦⬛
The plants are watered from rainwater captured in multiple water butts about the site, reducing the effect of flood risk, which in low lying areas such as the Humber region is critical. ☔️
Increasing the greening of the campus will help Wilberforce move towards our target of being #zerocarbon in the near future and will also help to reduce habitat loss for sensitive insect species.
As well as this, we are heavily reducing plastics across the campus, particularly in the catering outlets and did you know we have a huge solar array on the roof that powers Q Block? Look out for the #SolarEnergy screen next time you take a tour! ☀️

A-level Biologists have been particularly busy this week in the labs. Their practical was a fascinating university level session which involved the transformation of E.coli with a jellyfish fluorescence gene via a plasmid.
The students` scientific efforts earlier in the week were indeed successful, as today the transformed bacteria have taken up the plasmid containing the jellyfish GFP gene, making the colonies fluoresce under UV light, just like the jellyfish deep in the ocean!
Well done, this is an incredible achievement!

WORLD ART DAY 🌎
Today we celebrate the development, diffusion and enjoyment of art and what better way than showcasing a fantastic two-day workshop for a selection of students from across the visual arts subject area.
Led by artist in residence Jade Blood, the work the students create, which is focused around a brief of a “Future Fashion Food Party”, will be displayed by @abscultured in an installation in @humberstreetgallery later in the year! 🌟
The workshop is also heavily themed around sustainability, as well as looking at Punk, surrealism and alternative visions of the future.
Art student Jasmine has taken influence from Vivienne Westwood in her design as she uses vintage ties to create her structured garment. Jasmine has also taken her initiative outside of the classroom by getting her part-time workplace involved, collecting a stash of metal bottle caps which she plans to incorporate creatively into her final piece. 👔

INCREDI-BOWL ACHIEVEMENT 🎳🏆
Wilberforce student Avan Rhodes had a busy Easter break travelling to Helsinki in Finland for the European Bowling Youth Championships as part of Team England 🏴
Held at the famous Tali Bowling Alley in the Finnish capital, Avan described the atmosphere as “incredible” and the professional scale of the venue was “unlike anything they’d seen before”.
Avan absolutely triumphed over the week long international competition, not only leading the team at the opening ceremony… but also winning GOLD for England after an outstanding victory over the Czech Republic in the final!🥇
As well as being a #TenpinBowling star, Avan studies Engineering and Sport with the aspirations of moving to America for University in the future to continue their sporting career. 🎳
Well done Avan we are so proud of your achievement and thank you for bringing your incredible gold medal into college this week to show us! 🤩
