Wilberforce College Careers Fair highlights future opportunities for students

On Thursday 14th February 2019, Wilberforce College will welcome 75+ employers, universities and training providers to its annual Careers and Progression Fair and with so many exhibitors taking part it looks set to be the biggest and best one yet! The Fair offers current students a valuable opportunity to learn more about their options once they complete their college education, from further study to the world of work.

The Fair takes place just before a packed National Careers Week and National Apprenticeships Week programme of events in the college (4th – 8th March) which will include a talk by PUSH on ‘Employability Skills’ and ‘Options at 18’, as part of the National Collaborative Outreach Programme. Other events include all students visiting the Skills Humber event at the Bonus Arena on 6th March and workshops being delivered by universities and employers in college.  View the full college Careers Programme for 2018/19 at: https://wilberforce.ac.uk/college-life/careers-programme-2018-19/

Sarah Didsbury, Careers Manager at Wilberforce Sixth Form College, has been working hard to attract more exhibitors to the event this year, and promote the growing variety of opportunities for young people including degree level apprenticeships. Sarah comments:

“It is vital that our students have direct access to a wide variety of employers, Universities and training providers to reflect the diverse range of career pathways now available.  Careers fairs provide them with the chance to find out about excellent opportunities and progression routes, direct from those who will select and hire them in the future.  Our Fair will feature highly regarded and well known employers, prestigious Universities and training providers, who are travelling from across the country to advise our students.  I thank them all for taking the time to contribute to the careers advice that is offered to our students here at Wilberforce.”

Some of the exhibitors taking part in this year’s Careers Fair include Nestle, KCOM, Pepperell’s Solicitors, British Aerospace and NHS City Healthcare Partnership.  As part of an Oxbridge initiative to widen participation, Oxford University will be attending the fair to talk to students about studying at Oxbridge and the programmes of support they have in place for the next year.  There will also be a wide range of apprenticeship providers and local colleges in attendance in line with Wilberforce College’s commitment to providing impartial advice to students on their progression options.

Colin Peaks, Principal of Wilberforce College, comments:

‘Wilberforce places a high importance on employer engagement activities and I am delighted that so many businesses and employers are taking the time to come into Wilberforce for this event. The opportunity to meet prospective employers and university staff face to face, ask questions and receive practical advice is an invaluable one for our students, setting them on the right path to top university courses and exciting worthwhile careers.‘

Wilberforce Sixth Form College is based on Saltshouse Road in Hull. It was established in 1988 and has grown to cater for 1400 students working towards A Levels, BTECs, GCSEs and City and Guilds qualifications.
