Wilberforce Student Mikey Turner signs contract with Hull KR
Young rugby talent and current Level 3 BTEC Sport student, Mikey Turner, has made his mark on Hull Kingston Rovers, securing a professional contract after impressing the coaching staff during his recent trials.
The opportunity to trial with Hull KR came when one of the coaches reached out to Mikey, inviting him to take part in the development squad trials. “It was a very exciting moment as I wasn’t expecting it at the time. But when my coach came up to me, I said yes.” Mikey recalls “A lot of emotions were going through me at the time.”
For any player trying to make their mark, standing out in a competitive trial is no easy task. Mikey knew that to make the cut, he would have to give it his all, and that’s exactly what he did. Over the course of the two-month trial period, Mikey threw himself into his training with everything he had. “I changed the way I ate and trained and that helped me out both mentally and physically,” Mikey explains. “I had a lot of time to work on myself and get better, a lot of dedication went into it.” His commitment paid off when he was offered a contract with Hull KR.
When Mikey received the news, it was an overwhelming moment. “It was very unexpected, I wanted to jump for joy, but I tried my best to keep my composure,” he says. “I told my mum and dad straight away. I had such a mixture of emotions as I worked so hard for it, so I was just overall really happy.” The hard work, the sacrifices, and the changes Mikey made to his lifestyle had all led to this moment—a moment he will never forget.
This achievement is a significant milestone in Mikey’s rugby career, but it’s also a reflection of the work he has put in over the years. From his studies, where he developed his physical and mental strengths, to the intense training he did to prepare for the trials, Mikey’s journey has been one of constant growth.
Adding to the excitement, Mikey is joining Hull KR after the Development Squad recently clinched their championship title this year. Starting off this new chapter, winning the championship is the perfect way to begin this next step.
As Mikey steps into his professional rugby career, he is keen to inspire others to follow in his footsteps. “Don’t give up, the most unexpected time was when I got it. So just never give up.”
