Support services at Wilberforce Sixth Form College are outstanding. We work collaboratively with curriculum staff to ensure that any barriers to learning are removed, and that our students have the best chance of success.

We are extremely dedicated and committed in ensuring that all students receive the individual support they need to enable their success. Here is some further information about some of our different support teams…

Here to Help

Student Services

The Student Services Team offer widespread and extensive support for any emotional needs that may affect your learning during your time at Wilberforce. This includes health and well-being support on a one-to-one basis, or onward referrals to external services such as:

  • Education Mental Health Practitioner from Mind
  • College Counsellor
  • NHS Nurses
  • Hull Domestic Abuse Partnership

Financial Support

You may be eligible for financial support regarding transport, meals, trips and essential college items. Guidance on completing bursary applications and signposts for additional financial support can be found with our team at Reception.

RECEPTION IS BASED AT THE ENTRANCE OF THE COLLEGE

Learning Support

Our Learning Support Team are there to provide specialist support to any student who requires additional help with their learning. The team work on a personal basis with students who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), accessibility issues, impairments and other additional learning needs. If you have any additional needs throughout your time at Wilberforce and feel as though you are struggling with aspects of your course, or if you’d like support to help you succeed, the team are here to implement learning aids and a support structure that works for you. This could be individually, in a small group tuition setting, or in-class.

If you’d like to discuss Additional Learning Support (ALS) at Wilberforce, you can contact the Learning Support Manager, Ruth Hollands via email on reh@wilberforce.ac.uk or telephone 01482 711688. Alternatively, you can speak with your teachers who can help you make arrangements.

LEARNING SUPPORT IS BASED NEXT TO STUDENT SERVICES

Progress Mentors

All students are assigned a Progress Mentor who will provide individual, focused intervention and support sessions to ensure you achieve the best grades possible. In your second year, your Progress Mentor will give you specific guidance with your UCAS application should you want to apply to university. Additionally, you will attend weekly tutorial sessions led by your Progress Mentor which help prepare you for life beyond College.

PROGRESS MENTORS ARE BASED AT THE REAR OF THE LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE (LRC)

IT Facilities

We have developed our IT facilities to ensure there are no IT barriers to you being able to work independently – be it project work or an assignment that you need to get finished! You can access your college desktop and emails any time, any place, and you can install the latest version of Microsoft Office onto five of your own devices. The College has also implemented Wi Fi throughout the campus, so access during your free period won’t be a problem. Cloud email and storage provided via Office 365 ensures that you get a 10GB inbox and 100GB OneDrive storage. On top of this, you’ll also have remote access to all of the latest Microsoft Office programs, as well as up-to-date and industry standard Adobe Creative Suite software (available only on ICT/Visual Arts and Media courses).

IT Helpdesk

Our IT Helpdesk staff are available to answer your IT questions and resolve any IT issues you have.

You can visit the IT Helpdesk (located at the rear of the Learning Resource Centre) in person between 08:15am and 16:15pm or email your query to helpdesk@wilberforce.ac.uk.

Protecting our students

Below we have created three guides which detail a variety of measures Wilberforce Sixth Form College have put in place for our students, to show the importance of understanding topics such as:

If you feel unsafe or threatened, or you are concerned about a friend tell your teacher, visit Student Services on the upper Atrium Mezzanine to speak to a safeguarding officer, or talk to any member of staff. You can also report safeguarding to the safeguarding team:
