  • Wilberforce College Music Students Rock Fundraising for Papyrus

In December and January, Music Performance and Production students hosted two successful music events at Hull’s renowned Adelphi Club, raising just over £1,000 for their chosen charity; Papyrus - an organisation dedicated to preventing young suicide. The course is designed to amplify students’ musical talents, allowing them to gain real-life skills that are expected within the industry.

The performances from both first and second year students were exceptional, with a standout moment being the second year students’ leadership. Not only did they perform alongside the first years, but they also took on the responsibility of organising and executing the entire event. Additionally, the group collaborated throughout their project with local musician Mez, who is the lead singer of the band Life and a Youth Mental Health Practitioner in the NHS. Mez gave the students an incredible industry insight from his personal experiences as well as assisting them in creating their own Electronic Press Kits.

Harry one of the first years on the course, shared his experience stating that he was not only a solo artist at the gig in December but also played with his band Attreverso at the gig in January. Harry explained that both experiences were “friendly, supportive and had an inclusive community.”

Throughout their time on the Music Performance and Production course, Ethan, Cicci, and their peers have also operated and ran as Ronno Records at the college to promote both gigs. Ronno Records is one of the many Upskilling Programmes that the Wilberforce students can get involved with, designed to enhance their skill set alongside their studies. The second year students took the lead on every aspect of the project, including designing promotional posters and managing social media campaigns. Behind the scenes at the events, they worked closely with the Adelphi’s staff, ensuring health and safety standards were met and coordinating with the tech teams to ensure everything ran smoothly.

Ethan and Cicci, two second year students, who played key roles in organising and producing the gigs, shared their excitement when they learned how much money had been raised for Papyrus. Expressing that they were “chuffed, shocked and found the whole process really rewarding.” The pair wanted to create “a friendly atmosphere” for both first year students and the community, offering a platform for newcomers to break into the music scene.

The decision to support Papyrus and host the events at the Adelphi Club was intentional. As Cicci explained, “Papyrus is a cause close to our course, having previously raised money for them, and it's a charity that supports students and others our age.” Ethan added, “The Adelphi is a powerhouse for live music in Hull, and it’s inspiring to see what the city’s music scene has to offer.”
