Achievement Awards Evening 2024
This week we celebrated the outstanding progression of our students by showcasing their incredible achievements at our annual Awards Evening hosted by the University of Hull at their Middleton Hall.
Celebrating achievement
The outstanding achievements of inspirational students from Wilberforce College were recognised at our annual celebratory evening.
The theme of this year's event was "Bridging the skills gap for the future". Effectively doing so requires a collective effort that extends beyond the realms of education and training. It involves a commitment from individuals, businesses, educators, and policymakers to adapt, invest, and collaborate. Together, we can create a future where everyone has the skills they need to thrive in the ever-changing world of work.
Our students are shining examples of individuals who embrace this challenge and work towards equipping themselves with the skills needed to succeed in society.
The evening opened to the soulful sound of Music Performance & Production Student Megija Grzibovska, with the audience treated to a secondary later performance by our NAPA students as they took to the stage in a piece entitled "That's Entertainment".
The stage was not only adorned by musical talents, but also inspirational guest speakers such as The University of Hull’s Pro-Vice Chancellor Becky Huxley-Binns who articulated the Japanese concept to life "ikigai", emphasising that everyone will find their passion that gives value and joy to life, despite the often wavering journey it take to get there. Wilberforce Alumni Dr Sammi Iveson spoke about her time as a student at the college and her own personal educational pathway, from A Levels to Doctorate to career success as a medical writer for Reckitt, before being awarded for her outstanding achievements by Principal Colin Peaks.
An array of awards presented by devoted staff, partners and sponsors saw proud students rewarded for their academic excellence, sporting determination and work within the community. Resilience, hard work and exceptional aptitude were all themes of the words spoken about award recipients, with many recognitions of those who have achieved beyond expectation and often despite adversity.
A special thank you to everyone that contributed to making the evening such a success – the 200+ students, staff and guests in attendance, The University of Hull, NAPA and our sponsors Principal Resourcing, the Matthew Good Foundation and City Health Care Partnership.
