Overview
This course is for you if you are considering a career in Leisure and Sports management. Progressing onto Sports and Business management studies at university, or seeking apprenticeships or employment.
The leisure industry is significant in Hull’s Labour Market Information (LMI) due to its impact on employment, economic growth, and community well-being. Using our sports facilities and studying a focused pathway in leisure operations and management, this course will allow you to pursue the operations management careers and opportunities. You will gain an insight into various vocational aspects of sport and leisure, including practical and theoretical approaches. You will also work towards understanding Sports leadership, Leisure management and operations as well as current issues and developments in the industry. Your leadership ability and communication skills will be challenged, and you will take part in practical and academic assessments with the opportunity to practice skills in real life scenarios.
You will have the chance to obtain qualifications in a range of sports coaching and leadership courses. Lessons will make use of the college’s 3G and fitness suites, and you will also benefit from the expertise of guest speakers from professionals and organisations and trips to national centres of excellence.
What will you learn?
The units you will cover include:
- Anatomy and Physiology: looking in depth at the major body systems in the body and understanding the structure and function of these.
- Investigating Business in Sport and the Active Leisure Industry: are you thinking of owning your own business? Learn the different types of businesses, the benefits and negatives of each, you will then be given details of a sports business and will analyse its strengths and weaknesses
- Leisure Centre Operations: study the requirements and expectations of working in a leisure facility and develop your skills through practical application
- Leisure Management: leadership, management and health and safety principles that support the role of a future manager
- Fitness Training and Programming: including methods of training and planning safe and effective training programmes for a specific client.
- Professional Development in the Sports Industry: This unit covers the different jobs in the Sports industry, giving you an insight to the many opportunities available in this market
- Sports Leadership: study what makes a great leader. The different attributes needed and how to use different skills when leading groups
- Practical Sports Performance: demonstrating a range of skills, techniques and tactics and identifying strengths and areas for improvement of your own and others’ performance.
- Coaching for Performance: planning and delivering safe and effective coaching sessions in your chosen sport.
- Research Methods in Sport: look at the different research methods and how the validity, reliability and accuracy can affect perceptions
- Sports Event Organisation: investigating different types of sporting events and the roles and responsibilities of these to plan and deliver a sports event.
- Development and Provision of Sport and Physical Activity: study the development and provision in sport in the UK and its relationship with global sports
- Skill Acquisition in Sport: learn how athletes develop their skills to become the best. You will look into the factors that determine this, while studying the different theories of learning
- Current Issues in Sports: including the history of sport and the impact of media and technology.

Entry Requirements
You must have a minimum of four GCSEs at grades 9-4, including English Language, Maths and Science.

Students who complete a qualification in Sport go on to a wide variety of further study and career. These can include: Physiotherapist, Fitness and Leisure Centre operations and management programmes, Professional Athlete, Teacher or the Public Services. Students’ progress onto university and apprenticeships, using the broad and balanced unit coverage at level three to support various directions and pathways.
