Why should I study this course?

This course is for you if you are considering a possible career in the world of sport or if you would like to progress to University.

Using our sports facilities, this course will allow you to pursue the sporting success you desire. You will gain an insight into various vocational aspects of sport from practical and theoretical approaches. You will also work towards developing skills in sport through themes that include fitness training, anatomy, physiology, professional development and practical team sports. Your sporting ability will be challenged and you will take part in practical assessments with the opportunity to compete in local and national competitions in a range of sports.

You will have the chance to obtain qualifications in a range of sports coaching and leadership courses. Lessons will make use of the college's Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) and fitness suite and you will also benefit from the expertise of guest speakers from professional clubs and organisations and trips to national centres of excellence as well as local universities.

What will I study?

  • Anatomy and physiology – looking in depth at the major body systems in the body, understanding the structure and function of these, investigating how they change through exercise and other factors that affect how they work (externally assessed)
  • Fitness training and programming for health, sport and wellbeing– including the effects of lifestyle choices, principles of fitness, nutritional requirements and training methods, analysing client data and planning fitness training programmes (externally assessed)
  • Professional Development in the Sports Industry – investigating careers in the sports industry and developing a career plan to demonstrate essential skills required for successful employment.
  • Practical Sports Performance– demonstrating a range of skills, techniques and tactics and identifying strengths and areas for improvement of your own and others’ performance.

How is the course assessed?

Your learning is assessed by means of assignments (course work), set and marked by your teachers as well as undertaking external assessments (exams and timed assessments) marked by external moderators. Two of the units are externally assessed.

What will the course prepare me for?

The BTEC Extended Certificate in Sport has many benefits and is a recognised qualification which will prepare you for future work in the sports and leisure industry or progression onto university.

Private study

You will be expected to complete research and assignment work in your independent study time and will be given advice by you teachers as to what you need to do to meet your course work deadlines.

What materials will I need to provide?

You will need a file, paper and pens for classroom work; you will also need sports kit for practical sessions.

How will I be taught?

This course will include 4.5 hours on your timetable of directed lesson time. Content is delivered using a variety of methods and often you will be required to take part in practical sessions as part of your assessments.

Theory sessions will involve group work, taught lessons and presentations to your teachers and peers.

Lesson resources will be available on the course page on Teams for you to access in and outside of college.

What are the course requirements?

You will need to have achieved at least four GCSE grades 9-4 ( or equivalent) across three different subjects. You do not have to have studied Level 2 Sport or GCSE PE but it is an advantage if you have. 

What skills do I need?

A willingness to learn and take part in a variety of practical and fitness sessions! You need to have good time management and organisational skills to manage the workload effectively and meet assessment deadlines. As many lessons and tasks will be completed using digital technology you will also benefit from good ICT skills, however our staff will help show you how to use different platforms so that you can access all learning.
