Overview

Using our sports facilities, this course will allow you to pursue the sporting success you desire. You will gain an insight into various vocational aspects of sport from practical and theoretical approaches. You will also work towards developing skills in sport through themes that include fitness training, anatomy, physiology, professional development and practical team sports. Your sporting ability will be challenged and you will take part in practical assessments with the opportunity to compete in local and national competitions in a range of sports.

You will have the chance to obtain qualifications in a range of sports coaching and leadership courses. Lessons will make use of the college’s Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) and fitness suite and you will also benefit from the expertise of guest speakers from professional clubs and organisations and trips to national centres of excellence as well as local universities.

What will you learn?

Anatomy and physiology – looking in depth at the major body systems in the body, understanding the structure and function of these, investigating how they change through exercise and other factors that affect how they work (externally assessed)

Fitness training and programming for health, sport and wellbeing– including the effects of lifestyle choices, principles of fitness, nutritional requirements and training methods, analysing client data and planning fitness training programmes (externally assessed)

Professional Development in the Sports Industry – investigating careers in the sports industry and developing a career plan to demonstrate essential skills required for successful employment.

Practical Sports Performance– demonstrating a range of skills, techniques and tactics and identifying strengths and areas for improvement of your own and others’ performance.

Who is the course aimed at?

This course is for you if you enjoy the practical and theory sides of sport and are considering a career path that enables you to use and apply this knowledge to a job in the sports industry or you would like to progress onto university.

    You must have a minimum of four GCSEs at grades 9-4, including English Language and Maths.

    This course will provide you with the opportunity to hear from academics and industry professionals regarding pathways in Sport and careers that would be available to you. You will also get the chance to take part in trips, including our trip to Malta with the Advanced Colleges Trust.

  • Progression Arrow down

    A qualification in Sport has many benefits and is a recognised qualification which will prepare you for future work in the sports and leisure industry or progression onto university. 

  • Outcomes Arrow down

    Students who complete a qualification in Sport go on to a wide variety of jobs. These can include: Personal Trainer, Sports Coach, Physiotherapist, Fitness Center Manager, Professional Athlete or Teacher, to name a few.
