Hard work and creativity has paid off for one of our incredible talented students, Gemma Halliday, whose painting has been officially accepted into the Ferens Open Art Exhibition. An incredible achievement and huge milestone in her journey here at Wilberforce.  Gemma, formerly of Winifred Holtby Academy, studied A Levels Fine Art, Photography and Geography at Wilberforce and is now settling well into her studies on the UAL Level 4 Foundation Diploma in Art & Design, also here at Wilberforce.

When we spoke to Gemma, she shared that her encouragement didn’t come just from home, but her teachers also motivated her to take the leap in submitting her work also.  “I was a little nervous at first but excited too. It is my first time putting my work out publicly.”

Sharing work can seem daunting but for Gemma this moment clearly has been a confidence boost as she stated she feels more confident to develop and practice new creative ideas.

Looking ahead Gemma mentioned that she wants to specialise in fine art and study this at university. Gemma mentioned that since putting her work out publicly her confidence has grown, and this has been a factor into helping her progress with her work too.

When asked about advice to give to someone who wants to follow in Gemma’s footsteps Gemma had this to say; “Just keep practicing and refining your skills.”

Her painting will be on display until January, and we encourage you to visit the exhibition and show your support for her amazing talent.
