Overview

If you have always had an interest in how the law works, then this could be the course for you. The course is designed for learners who are interested in the vocational aspect of the subject with a view to working in the field of law or a related industry.

What will you learn?

• Dispute solving in civil law

• Criminal law and the legal system

• Applying the law

• Aspects of Tort

In year one you will learn about:

• The hierarchy of the court system and how it works; the roles undertaken by the personnel of the courts, for example, barristers, solicitors, judges and legal executives as well as lay people such as magistrates and juries. You will also look at alternative methods of solving disputes and ways in which individuals can fund their cases.

• Sources of law, in other words where the law comes from. This will include influences on Parliament, how an Act of Parliament is made, how judges create and interpret law and the impact of European Law on English Law.

• The tort of negligence and principles of criminal liability, together with the knowledge of damages and the aims of sentencing.

In your second year you will:

• Gain the skills and knowledge to apply the law on murder, an understanding of the law on manslaughter, together with knowledge of police powers with respect to arrest and detention.

• Learn about the law relating to property offences such as theft, robbery and burglary, fraud, criminal damage, together with further knowledge on police search powers.

• Learn about the four main areas of family law: marriage and relationships, divorce and ending relationships, children and maintenance.

Who is the course aimed at?

This course is for you if you have a genuine interest in law and would like to learn about this fascinating subject in depth through the completion of assignments.

    You must have a minimum of five GCSEs grades 9-4, including English Language and Maths.

    This course will provide you with the perfect base for a career in Law or opportunity to explore what Law can help you to achieve. Within college, as part of our Upskilling Programme, why not take part in the Debating Society and compete regionally and nationally in competitions? We also have our Mooting team that recently came second in an event at the University of Hull – a brilliant addition to any personal statement! As well as this, you will be given the chance to hear from many visiting speakers and industry professionals, as well as visiting the courts in Hull to see your learning in action.

    If you choose to continue your studies of Law there are many courses in higher education to choose from, some of which specialise in Law whilst others offer a chance to combine subjects. Applied Law is also a good option if you are looking for an apprenticeship or to go straight into work – it is highly valued by sectors like the Police Force and Probation Services.

  • Outcomes Arrow down

    Students who complete a qualification in Law go on to a wide variety of jobs. These can include: Solicitor, Barrister, Paralegal, Advice Worker, Human Resources Officer, Data Analyst or Teacher, to name a few.
