Overview

The Public Services industry is one of the largest employers in the country. It is a vibrant, vocational course which has both practical and theoretical elements. In choosing the Policing, Crime and Punishment Pathway you will gain knowledge and understanding of the skills required to work within the Police or Criminal Justice System, this pathway is also an excellent steppingstone for onward progression to university.

You will also have the opportunity to undertake a variety of experiences, meet a range of teams that work within the public sector and have the chance to gain first-hand experience and knowledge of the services.

What will you learn?

You will study the ways in which the UK courts system operates, and the police powers of search and arrest. You will also consider methods used to prevent crime. You will study criminal investigation procedures, including methods used to preserve a crime scene. There are also compulsory fitness sessions to help develop your fitness in readiness for application to the public services.

You will have two exam units:

• Behaviour and Discipline in the Uniformed Protective Services

• Government and the Protective Services

In addition, you will undertake continuous assessment of practical and academic projects and assignments. The visits to, and presentations from the services, are assessed and are a compulsory part of your course and your grade.

Who is the course aimed at?

This course is for you if you want a career in the public sector and uniformed service occupations, with a focus on jobs within the Criminal Justice System such as the Police service, Prison Service, Probation service, and the courts. It will give you the skills that are necessary for a career in Uniformed Protective Services, but also skills that are transferable and important to any career, such as communication and time management. You could also progress onto university, with a wide range of subjects to specialise in, such as Law, Criminology, Peace Studies, Sociology, Psychology and many more. This course is also useful if you are not yet sure what your future holds because it is multi-disciplinary and therefore covers a large range of subjects, including: fitness, biology, law, criminology, psychology, teamwork, leadership, government and many more. Studying a subject this diverse has the benefit that it can lead to many different courses at university, as well as a variety of careers both in the public and private sector.

    You must have a minimum of four GCSEs at grades 9-4 in three or more subjects. You should also have a grade 4 or higher in GCSE English Language or Maths.

    This course will provide you with many opportunities depending on the pathway you choose. There will be visits from industry professionals, such as the Bomb Squad, as well as visits to the courts and outdoor activity centres. You will also be able to get involved with our Upskilling Programme, which will offer many different activities to enrich your learning and help you to grow your skills.

    Students who complete a qualification in Public Services can go on to complete a degree in an area like Policing. For those who choose the Military and Outdoor Skills pathway, this course also helps to prepare you for becoming part of the Armed Forces, which has many different job areas to explore.

  • Outcomes Arrow down

    Students who complete a qualification in Public Services go on to a wide variety of jobs. These can include: Police Officer, Army Officer, Investigator, Paramedic, Border Force Officer or Security Consultant.
