Overview

Step into the dynamic world of public services, a sector that includes essential roles in the Police, Probation, Prison and Courts Service. This vibrant and vocational course combines hands-on practical experiences with engaging theoretical learning to prepare you for an exciting and impactful career. 
Throughout the course, will study principles of Psychology, Police Powers, Law, Criminology and Teamwork and Leadership. 

You’ll explore how the UK courts system operates and gain an insight into critical police powers of search, arrest and detention. You’ll explore a range of criminal offences and considering theories of criminal behaviour to consider why people behave the way they do and how behaviour is shaped by our environment and experiences. You will investigate the innovative methods used within the Criminal Justice System to prevent crime and punish offenders, as well consider the impact of crime on victims and society. You will explore the UK courts system, focusing on the role of court personnel, trial procedures and sentencing.  

You will also have the opportunity to undertake a variety of experiences, meet a range of teams that work within the public sector and have the chance to gain first-hand experience and knowledge of the services.

  • Police Powers and Law 

Year 2: 

  • Criminology  
  • Leadership, Teamwork and Communication 

In addition, you will undertake continuous assessment of practical and academic projects and assignments.

Who is the course aimed at?

This course is for you if you want a career in the public sector and uniformed service occupations, with a focus on jobs within the Criminal Justice System such as the police service, prison service, probation service, and the courts. It will give you the skills that are necessary for a career in Uniformed Protective Services, but also skills that are transferable and important to any career, such as communication and time management.  

You could also progress onto university. This course is multi-disciplinary and therefore covers a large range of subjects, including; law, criminology, psychology, sociology, teamwork, leadership, government and many more. Studying a subject this diverse has the benefit that it can lead to many different courses at university, as well as a variety of careers both in the public and private sector.

    You must have a minimum of five GCSEs at grades 9-4, including English Language and Maths.  

  • Experiences Arrow down

    This course will provide you with many opportunities to engage with public services and the local community. There will be trips to related services such as HMP Hull, and visits from industry professionals, such as Humberside Police, Border force, Immigration service, as well as, developing your teamwork skills and resilience.  You will also be able to get involved with our Upskilling Programme, which will offer many different activities to enrich your learning and help you to grow your skills.

    Students who complete a qualification in Public Services can use skills and knowledge gained in this course to gain employment into the public service sector or progress onto further study at university to complete a degree in an areas like Professional Policing, Criminology, Psychology, Law, Sociology. 

  • Outcomes Arrow down

    Students who complete a qualification in Public Services go on to a wide variety of jobs. These can include; Police Officer, Criminal Psychologist, Probation Officer, Crime Analyst, Solicitor, Barrister, Victim Support Worker, Social Worker and many more.
