MASTERCLASSES TO MASTERFUL PITCHES ✨
Over 90 Year 1 Maths and Business Students participated in an entrepreneur day hosted by @feohull as a part of their NxGen programme.
The programme involves local entrepreneurs who volunteer their time to help inspire young people to think about self-employment as a career option.
The students received marketing masterclasses, led by outstanding local business directors, before pitching a business idea where prizes were to be won!
The whole group learned a range of valuable skills and showcased their entrepreneurial talents, with three exceptional teams selected as winners!

CAREERS DAY 🤩
Yesterday saw the turn of Health & Sciences as the focus theme in the series of Careers Days at Wilberforce. 🩺🧬
The college was full of an array of exhibitors including employers, apprenticeship providers and universities all here to engage and provide advice to students about future career pathways and higher education opportunities! 💬
Our local healthcare providers are some of the biggest employers in the area employing staff in roles such as finance, IT, business admin, HR, engineering, as well as health-related roles.
For those students looking to undertake some voluntary work, Hull University Teaching Hospitals Voluntary Services were here to chat about volunteering opportunities in the majority of departments in our local hospital, not just patient facing roles.
@sunderlanduni University Training Ambulance had a lot of interest parked out the front of college and enabled students to gain first hand experience of what it is like to work and operate onboard one of these critical pieces of medical-care equipment as well as a crash course in life-saving paramedic care. 🚨
As a Wilberforce student you will have ample opportunity to gain an insight into many different career pathways through fairs like this, workshops, external visits and guest speakers as well as one-to-one career guidance with our Careers Manager.
💡A top tip if you haven’t already, is to research industries of interest to you and roles within sectors that you may want to pursue!

HOUSE OF LORDS INSIGHT ⭐️
Last week Law, Criminology and Politics students engaged in an incredibly interesting talk from former Leader of the Green Party and Member of the House of Lords, Baroness Natalie Bennett.
Not only did @nataliebennettgreen go into detail about roles in the British Government, real-life political jargon and the process in which the @ukhouseoflords pass laws, she also gave an extremely personal experience of what it is actually like work within politics, enabling the students gain an invaluable insight into this career pathway. 🤩
The session culminated in a Q&A section where students enquired about Natalie’s stance on topical debates, as well gaining tips on how to ‘wow’ future examiners with particular references from her parliamentary repertoire. ❔

What a day a group of students from across the Faculty of Maths, Business, Economics and Travel & Tourism have had at @altontowers 🤩
Experiencing the many attractions of the theme park first hand has enabled the students to gain a key insight which will further their investigation of Alton Towers as a business and successful visitor attraction through the application of design, business operations, marketing and strategy… as well as having a lot of fun! 🎉
For quite a lot of the group, this was the first time visiting the park, and what better way to experience it than with friends! Favourite rides of the day included Smiler, Rita and the Congo River Rapids! 🌊
As a Wilberforce student you get the opportunity to go on a variety of different trips and visits and it’s a great way to make new friends and create life-long memories! ⭐️

What a day a group of students from across the Faculty of Maths, Business, Economics and Travel & Tourism have had at @altontowers 🤩
Experiencing the many attractions of the theme park first hand has enabled the students to gain a key insight which will further their investigation of Alton Towers as a business and successful visitor attraction through the application of design, business operations, marketing and strategy… as well as having a lot of fun! 🎉

A group of students from this subject area are doing just that by being involved in a Upskilling to plan, coordinate and participate in a charity football match to raise money for local charity @hull4heroes 💫
As well as enriching their skills, being part of this activity, which is across levels and years, has also meant working with new peers with similar interests. 🤩
With 3 WEEKS to go until the match, today the group did a training session on the 3G pitch (pictured) and will be back fundraising in the Atrium tomorrow, as well as continuing to gain individual sponsors.

EARTH DAY 🌎🌱
On this #EarthDay2024 it is important for everyone to reflect on the impacts human activity is having on our planet. The major challenges we all face are:
1️⃣Climate Change and the resultant sea level rise
2️⃣Pollution, particular of plastics
3️⃣Habitat destruction and loss of biodiversity
At Wilberforce we are trying to mitigate human impacts on several fronts. Increasing the number of plants on site therefore actively making our campus greener, is helping to reduce our carbon footprint. Growing more plants in our numerous living walls (that take up less space), in our growers and on our field areas will capture carbon and also increase biodiversity. More flowering plants attract insects such as bees and butterflies which will in turn attract birds. 🌿🦋🐦⬛
The plants are watered from rainwater captured in multiple water butts about the site, reducing the effect of flood risk, which in low lying areas such as the Humber region is critical. ☔️
Increasing the greening of the campus will help Wilberforce move towards our target of being #zerocarbon in the near future and will also help to reduce habitat loss for sensitive insect species.
As well as this, we are heavily reducing plastics across the campus, particularly in the catering outlets and did you know we have a huge solar array on the roof that powers Q Block? Look out for the #SolarEnergy screen next time you take a tour! ☀️

A-level Biologists have been particularly busy this week in the labs. Their practical was a fascinating university level session which involved the transformation of E.coli with a jellyfish fluorescence gene via a plasmid.
The students` scientific efforts earlier in the week were indeed successful, as today the transformed bacteria have taken up the plasmid containing the jellyfish GFP gene, making the colonies fluoresce under UV light, just like the jellyfish deep in the ocean!
Well done, this is an incredible achievement!

WORLD ART DAY 🌎
Today we celebrate the development, diffusion and enjoyment of art and what better way than showcasing a fantastic two-day workshop for a selection of students from across the visual arts subject area.
Led by artist in residence Jade Blood, the work the students create, which is focused around a brief of a “Future Fashion Food Party”, will be displayed by @abscultured in an installation in @humberstreetgallery later in the year! 🌟
The workshop is also heavily themed around sustainability, as well as looking at Punk, surrealism and alternative visions of the future.
Art student Jasmine has taken influence from Vivienne Westwood in her design as she uses vintage ties to create her structured garment. Jasmine has also taken her initiative outside of the classroom by getting her part-time workplace involved, collecting a stash of metal bottle caps which she plans to incorporate creatively into her final piece. 👔
