Overview

If you are already thinking about doing a degree either in Maths, or in a subject where there will be a high mathematical content (such as Engineering, some Science degrees) then you should be thinking about including Further Mathematics amongst your course choices to push your Mathematical ability to the best it can be.

Further Maths is becoming increasingly popular. This is because universities are including it more and more in the ‘must have done’ requirements for certain courses. The Further Maths course is structured, organised and taught in a very similar way to the Maths course at Wilberforce.

What will you learn?

Area 1. Further Pure Mathematics (e.g. Proof, Complex Numbers, Matrices, Further Algebra and Functions, Further Calculus, Hyperbolic Functions, Differential Equations, Trigonometry)

Area 2 and Area 3. These will be chosen from the following three applications:

• Mechanics (e.g. Dimensional Analysis, Momentum and Collisions, Work, Energy and Power, Circular Motion)

• Statistics (e.g. Discrete Random Variables, Poisson Distribution, Type I and II Errors, Chi Tests)

• Discrete (e.g. Graphs, Networks, Flows, Linear Programming, Critical Path Analysis, Game Theory)

This course must be studied alongside A Level Maths.

Who is the course aimed at?

This course is for you if you want to push your Mathematical ability to the best it can be! You should definitely take it if you are already thinking about doing a degree in Maths. Another reason to take it is that it helps you stand out from other students who are applying to the same courses as you at university.

Entry Requirements & Other Info
  • Entry Requirements Arrow down

You must have a minimum of five GCSE grades 9-4 and a minimum GCSE average of 5.3. You should also have at least a grade 4 in GCSE English Language and at least a grade 6 in GCSE Maths.

This course must be studied alongside A Level Maths.

  • Experiences Arrow down

This course will provide you with the opportunity to explore maths extensively and give you an insight into more specific areas, like Engineering. As a student on the Further Maths course, you will be given the chance to take part in revision sessions and study groups, as well as take part in trips to leading universities. You will also be able to hear from guest speakers on the subject, and take part in maths challenges with regional and national colleges.

  • Progression Arrow down

Further Maths is a great subject for those considering completing a degree in a STEM subject at university. Courses like Maths, Physics or Engineering are a good fit for those who choose a Further Maths A Level.

  • Outcomes Arrow down

Students who complete a qualification in Further Maths go on to a wide variety of jobs. These can include: Actuary, Astronomer, Accountant, Game Designer, Data Analyst or Teacher, to name a few.
