Overview

Psychology is the scientific study of minds and behaviour. As such, it is a part of our everyday lives. An understanding of human behaviour is fundamental to many jobs in society and the study of psychology at degree level and beyond remains a very popular choice.

Applied Psychology explores difference approaches in Psychology and it is a good choice for those that want a more hand-on way of studying Psychology.

This course will prepare you for further study and a career in any career where other people are involved, for example areas such as teaching, social work, counselling, police or medicine. You will develop your skills in research, analysis, communication and logical thinking which are all valued in a wide variety of degrees and jobs.

What will you learn?

You will have the opportunity to conduct research as part of your coursework. You will complete your own psychological investigations using standard sector research methodology and examine the application of your findings and the implication for professional practice and provision.

You will also study some applied areas of psychology including:

• Health Psychology: stress and factors that impact on an individual’s health

• Forensic Psychology: you will study criminal psychologists and their work with patients suffering from mental illnesses.

Who is the course aimed at?

This course is for you if you like science, are open-minded and are interested in the world around you. It is also the better choice if you want a more hands-on way of studying Psychology.

    You must have a minimum of four GCSEs at grades 9-4 including English Language, a Science and Maths.

    This course will provide you with the opportunity to hear from guest speakers and visiting academics about Psychology. Past visitors have included Dr Guy Sutton, the Director of Medical Biology at the University of Nottingham School of Medicine. You will also get the opportunity to visit leading universities to explore whether a future in psychology is the right path for you.

    Psychology helps you to understand people’s behaviour, so is particularly beneficial for those looking to study teaching or social work at university. This course also helps to support those who venture into apprenticeships, especially helping in childcare, nursing or social care sectors.

    Students who complete a qualification in Psychology go on to a wide variety of jobs. These can include: Clincal Psychologist, Forensic Psychologist, Advice Worker, Counsellor, Mental Health Practitioner or Teacher, to name a few.
